Welcome to Fishmadman and the world of fly fishing with wake, riffling hitch and dry flies

Fly fishing for salmon and steelhead on the surface is probably the most exciting sports humans can venture into – This form of fly fishing has become increasingly popular in the last 60 years – but anglers have most likely been fishing steelhead and salmon on the top since the birth of fly fishing

We collect information about our sport – and design some of the best flies for the job

READ MORE ABOUT OUR MISSION

THINGS WE WORK WITH

On the Fishmadman site, we will highlight the essence of surface fly fishing. We hope to do so by showing you technique, know-how and some of the many fascinating flies made for our sport.

SURFACE FLY PATTERNS MADE ON TUBE ARE OUR SPECIALITY

Dry fly – Wake fly – Skaters – Riffling Hitch fly tied on the tube will give you a feather-light solution that stays on top and perform better than most of their counterparts tied on long shank hooks. We have multiple pages on Fishmadman showing you how to do such tube flies.

THE WORLD OF THE BOMBER FLY

During summer, we stay at salmon rivers in Norway – and when the conditions are right, we will tie on a dry fly like a salmon Bomber. You will find Bombers at the river bank cut into shape on our pages.

Just like we make flies tuned to the rivers we fish – other anglers will have honed trout and salmon Bombers just for their district, river and even unique pools – We try continuously to collect this information and publish it on our pages and blog. Read more

BOMBER DRY FLY ON TUBE

Our Bomber dry flies are tied on a tube. A design we developed in 1995 and still work to refine and perfect. On our pages, you will find detailed illustrations that could aid you in developing your surface flies tied on a tube. Read more

RIFFLING HITCH & WAKE FLY ON TUBE

Riffling Hitch is a technique that emerged during almost a century of fly fishing traditions. Allegedly the method was generated as a coincidence by Canadians – who in Victorian days would have recycled damaged gut-eye flies and tied them directly to the leaders using a series of hitches – Herby the fly could have trailed to the surface, creating the all-important Riffling Hitch wake. Read more

Like many other European anglers, we will tie Riffling Hitch flies on a tube and our pages, you will find special Riffling Hitch and wake flies done on our Riffling Hitch tube design – See the comprehensive pages on How to work with tube flies on the surface. Read more

THE TUBE FLY – ANOTHER ACE ON YOUR HAND

The tube fly has been part of the European fly box since the 1940s, and anglers have been developing fly patterns on a tube that would suit different rivers and seasons. A fly tied on a tube could look and work like any other fly tied on a single salmon hook – But it can also be something completely different – with abilities that go beyond any fly you have tried… tap into our vast knowledge base on tube fly know-how – and get another Ace on your hand.

SUPERIOR SALMON AND STEELHEAD FLIES

Passion & curiosity for flies and fishing is what determines our editorial line on Fishmadman – and we have collected some of the most interesting flies on our page: Flies like General Practitioner, Brooks Sunray Shadow, Collie Dog, The Frances Fly, and a Micro Conehead fly like the Kinnaber Killer.

Salmon fly fishing

August: Min favorit måned for fiskeri – Laksen er begyndt at finde pladser i pools- Eftermiddag bliver til aften – Vinteren venter i bjergene

  • Rørfluer & Waddington Shank – Et Es på hånden
  • Fishmadman 2013 konkurrence
  • Nye ting i FISHMADMAN butikken

Waddington shank setup

Hotho westergaard giant Atlantic salmon

UP-SIDE-DOWN Waddington Shank

Denne laks + 21 kilo

Waddington shank Hotho Westergaard

Waddington Shank Garry Dog

Størrelse for rørfluer

Yet another season has gone by and we would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone participating with words and images to our annual sporting event. This beautiful picture was sent to us by Fly Fishing writer & photographer; Mr. Ian D. Martin, The Usual Press, who during the season has mailed us pictures from various fantastic fishing spots in Canada. Ian wrote us:

” You’ve encouraged me to submit for the FISHMADMAN contest for this year, and I have done so. Rather than a photo of one of the fish I caught on your flies, I thought it might be nice to send in a photo of a fishing scene instead”

Ian wrote us; “Pictures above is from the Trinity River. I caught two fish,  one was really fresh!  The other one took a green squirrel V-tube, but it was not rigged for riffling but fished as a conventional micro tube fly”

” Moisie fishing this morning was canceled because of excessive wind and rain and fog 🙁  We hope this afternoon will work out, and that the helicopter can fly tomorrow to get us to Mile 12 Pool !”

” Hello Fishmadman : A little fish story – On the upper Moisie River in Quebec, the access is by helicopter. After no fish hooked for the whole day, and the weather getting worse, we had only 30 minutes until the helicopter was grounded. That’s when I saw this salmon roll, near a big rock well out in the pool. I ran down and quickly waded into position and managed to work out a long cast to cover the fish with a Green Squirrel hitch tube, and it took on the first swing. The helicopter arrived just as I was landing the fish, and we had to quickly release a beautiful Moisie salmon and race to pack up our gear as the impatient pilot waited with the rotors turning!

Ian D. Martin er forfatter & fotograf, kommer rundt til mange fantastiske fiske pladser – Denne sommer fik vi flere flotte rapporter fra hans fiskeri. Ian skrev os;

Sunray Shadow salmon fly

Sunray Shadow one of the most famous tube flies ever. Designed by UK angler Raymond Brooks in the 60´s – Sunray Shadow is A must-have fly in the fly box for anglers pursuing fresh giant salmon on big river systems.

Tube flies with a long wing like the Sunray Shadow is part of a unique group of salmon flies. These flies with their simple expression is favored on many rivers across the Northern hemisphere, and they are often associate with salmon fishing in the witching hour … but they can be used in all kinds of fishing situations and is a valuable asset in the fly box

The Sunray shadow story

The Sunray Shadow or; Brooks Sunray Shadow is yet another mythical fly and a must-have in the salmon fly box. Originally designed by late British salmon angler Mr. Raymond Brooks (Ray Brooks)

In the early 60´s Ray traveled through Norway to find the perfect salmon river. He did so with his wife Margit, and they found the rivers in the districts of Møre & Romsdal where they fished for many years.

Ray and Margit had a timber log cabin build at Hellesylt by the Korsbrekke River. To let the salmon reach further into the river system Ray had three different salmon ladders made. Sadly the log cabin was taken by a snow avalanche in the spring of 1985.

Every summer Margit and Ray would fish the fantastic Årøy (Aaroy) River that yield the biggest average weight of salmon on earth, but their favorite of rivers was the majestic lærdal (Laerdal) River that runs to the Sognefjord. A river that had a historic run of big Atlantic salmon and a sea-trout.

The lærdal (Laerdal) River was known as the Queen of salmon rivers and Ray and Margit held the lease for the river from 1966 until the mid 90´s when this and other rivers in the region saw a devastating outbreak and infestation of the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris

The Lærdal River is gin clear and of medium size which made it possible to reach  the river from the bank. It is in these fabulous surroundings that Ray Brooks creates the Sunray Shadow fly.  The first fly was done in the early 60´s – and the Sunray Shadow soon proved so good that Ray and Margit started a production of the flies.

The flies were tied on tubes designed exclusively for the purpose, consisting of a inner and outer tube, allowing a tube fly hook to rest in the back end of the tube.  Hair from monkey was used in the design of the wing. The monkey hair came out of a carpet that friend and fellow angler from Switzerland had in his living room. Later Ray found a supplier of the hairs needed and finally also made a registered pattern on the fly that he named: The Sunray Shadow.

The sunray Shadow fly was tied commercially for the Brooks family by Danish company Lawcock and later with fly-tiers in Singapore.

The Collie Dog Here the Border Collie. Excelent fly tying material

The Collie Dog fly

Hair from dogs can defiantly be top-notch fly tying material but it is illegal to sell hair from dogs or cats in Europa – so if you can get your hands on some long haired canines it is worth your while sweet talking the owner into a bit of trimming. The Collie dog breed comes in many shapes and colors I prefer to be sociable with these two critters: Border Collie  or Rough Collie

Collie Dog fly tied on tubeCollie Dog and Sunray Shadow is names closely linked with long winged flies, and you will find variations of these famous salmon tube flies in fly fishing shops around the world.

Here a 1 inch Collie Dog pearl version with a 3 inch wing

Collie Dog fly tied on tubeThe Collie Dog fly is a old Scottish fly pattern designed in the late 18´century.  It was probably one of the very first, if not the first hair-wing salmon fly ever, to be deployed on a salmon river.

Still today it`s argued whether or not it is UK or US anglers who rightfully can take the claim for the salmon hair-fly project ?

The Collie Dog was originally designed to be tied on double or single hook`s – Today most Collie Dogs is tied on tube – with or without the silver body. As hair from Collie (Border Collie) can be hard to obtain, most anglers will settle for quality hair from goat like the Kashmir Goat

Here a version of the Collie Dog actually tied with hair from a Border Collie

Fishing tube flies with long hair

Atlantic salmon on big collie dog flyThese flies with their long wavy wing can have a hypnotic grip on salmon. Presented correctly the salmon will go to great length to intercept a fly like the Sunray Shadow or Collie Dog, often chasing the fly across the river – hitting it in a spectacular manner much in the way they attack a wobble, spoon or spinner – When fishing keep your eye on the fly and bring it all the way in to the bank…this is one fly that salmon will stay with all the way – and it might hit it the last second.

Fishmadman tube Sunray Shadow greenWhen fishing close to the surface with long-winged flies anglers often see the salmon reacting to the fly by splashing or waking, something that can be quite useful – when you actually want to determine if the pool holds fish or not. Flies like these are also named: lifters or Reaction flies…

Here a Small Pearl and Green Sunray Shadow Buy fly  Buy salmon & steelhead flies

In Iceland the Sunray Shadow will also be used as a Attention fly, fished over lies that might be unproductive or over-fished – The Sunray Shadow is then replace with a much smaller pattern and salmon will very often come to the surface.

Speed kills

When summer arrives and water starts heating up – speed seems to be a key word with these flies, and anglers will fish it in ways to generate speed – this could be done with floating or intermediate line fished straight across the river. By hand-lining the fly back, in long pulls. By mending the fly line downstream to generate a belly, hereby increasing the pull on the fly line and so the speed of the fly.[hr]

When fishing in colder water it is advisable to fish the Sunray Shadow or Collie Dog fly slow and make sure to present it to the fish for a longer period. Use intermediate lines with sink tip or even full sinking lines to fish productive fast water.

Working with size

Riffling Hitch tube fly

Big is not always better and particularly not when it comes to salmon. In relation to this it is well worth keeping different sizes of these special flies in the box – Although a 2 inch Collie Dog or Sunray Shadow might seem big when other anglers work with tiny # 10`s – 12´s in hot water – it can still be surprisingly efficient to use these flies fished very close to the surface.

Here a Riffling Hitch version of the Sunray Shadow tied with hair from Sunray Zebra Shadow ™

Big black sunray shadow tube fly for salmonWe use a selection of flies in the range from 2 to + 6 inches. The 3 1/2 inch version being the regular fly on most rivers, and the smaller versions for low water summer conditions – The bigger flies are made for early season fishing and even in low temperature; 5 – 6 degrees Celsius (41 – 43 degrees Fahrenheit) – salmon will come right to the top to grab them

We also bring out the big Sunray Shadow flies when summer turns into autumn, in those precious hours when everything starts turning dark… Here the big Sunray Shadow might be the best choice for those local salmon becoming restless and agitated in the dark See other big Sunray Shadows in the E-shop  Buy salmon & steelhead flies

Sunray Zebra Shadow - Big fly from Fishmadman

What does these big flies represent ?

Anglers often wonder why such and such fly is efficient ? – Some flies like; prawn-flies and nymphs are more obvious than others.

Long winged flies like the Collie Dog and the Sunray Shadow is often mentioned  in relationship with glass eels or juvenile eels – a food sours that the Atlantic salmon could meet in the sea on its way to and from the river (in European waters often in size 40 – 45 millimeters  – 1.6 – 1.8 inches)

In terms of food look-alike`s we believe that these big flies could represent a broad spectra of critters that the salmon could meet throughout it´s entire life at sea,  like; sand eels, herring, sprats, prawns and juvenile eels – All erratic moving food that the salmon will have to react to very decisively.

[approved]It is also with these – straight in from the sea aggressive salmon, that the Sunray Shadow and Collie Dog is most productive. It is like their recent feeding behavior at sea still is set to full speed when they enter the river. See Brooks Zebra Shadow in shop  Buy salmon & steelhead flies

Blue Charm on tube

The parr fly

Another big wing fly we have had success with throughout the years is a version of the classic Blue Charm. The wing of the fly is tied up of sections of silver tippet squirrel – with its contrast marked body it is to give the impression of a salmon parr – Fly is fished slowly over freshly arrived salmon that often will attack it ferociously.

The big Blue Charm Parr fly – A tube fly for super fresh salmon …especially from the beginning of August

Actually the salmon parr know quite well that it will have to keep clear of these fresh aggressive salmon – Ones giants arrive from the sea…all salmon parr have gone into hiding.

The recipe to success

We have all our long-winged Sunray Shadow and Collie Dog flies tied on our Flexible plastic tube Buy salmon & steelhead flies  with the exception of the occasional fly tied on an aluminum tube. If we need to fish further below the surface we rather use a sink tip or full sinking line, than use weight on the fly – It is as the fly looses some of it´s fish catching abilities when weighted down to much.

UV FLY PAINT from Loon on tube fly hooks

Hooks for long wing flies

Fishing with these special flies is an action filled sport and you will feel fish hitting and pulling the fly during a fishing session – Ever so often these same fish will have a go at the fly more than one time – as long as they haven’t touched the hook.

We use both single, double and treble hooks on these flies and recommend that you set a small blob of glue in the fork of the double and treble hooks. This will to some extend, prevent the hairs from getting seriously entangle in the Lonn UV-FLY paint for hooksconstruction of the hook. Getting the wing caught up in the bend of the hook is an inevitable part of fishing flies with long soft hair and to make sure everything is working as intended, one has to check the fly on a regular basis – Obviously an annoying hassle – but it is well worth the effort to put the time into the long wing project. How to fish the sunray and collie dog tube flyWhen summer arrives, and water starts heating – speed seems to be a key element with these long wing flies, and anglers will fish it in different ways to generate speed – This could be done with floating or intermediate line fished straight across the river. By hand-lining the fly back, fast – in long pulls. By mending the fly line downstream to generate a belly, increasing the pull on the fly line and so the speed of the fly.
I have often used this technique during summer/autumn and seen how it may work wonders for a short time – then suddenly lose its effect entirely.

retreving salmon flies

Right: Fish the Sunray Shadow or collie dog fly on a 90 ° angle and pull the fly – in jerks – as fast as you can across the salmon lie – Don´t worry about overdoing speed – the salmon is much faster than you. A good trick is to stop and leave the fly motionless altogether – when you come close to your rod tip – the salmon will often take the fly in a big splash or jump.

Strike when it jumps.

If you see fish jumping in the path of your fly – it will most certainly be the salmon that has grabbed the fly – I always strike when I see the fish jumping – 9 – out of 10 times I hook the fish..and it will go ballistic after such a hooking …so be prepared to clear the line fast out the guides after hooking-up

Pulling the Sunray or other long wing salmon tube flies fast across the river – even having the fly jump through the surface is a highly efficient way of connecting with salmon – And big and small fish may follow the fly trying to grab it in high jumps.

Sometimes I stop pulling in line when salmon chase the fly – I leave it still in the water’s surface – and wait for the salmon to grab it.

Salmon Bomber dry fly

Choice of leader for dry fly fishing

White Tube Bomber - The fishmadman version of the classic Bomber

Salmon fishing: You have the chance of hooking up with fish from 3 – 50 lb. You could be using tiny # 16 skaters or a humming-bird size fly – What leader to us for dry fly fishing?

Obviously, you would use a variety of leaders in your fishing. Some prefer to; keep it simple with only a length of nylon – others would choose a custom-made leader – At the end of the day, choice of leader is often a matter of temperament and tradition.

Maxima chameleon perfect for dry fly

Fly fishing leader formula

Dry fly fishing for salmon is definitely a close combat sport. Often the angler will be no more than a rods length away from the fish when it hits the fly – Setting the hook demands a fast right hand and one could quite easily snap the leader or straighten tiny hooks.

Fighting fish and especially grills (small salmon) could also be a very demanding task on a short line. Small grills will often stay close to you – and spend time somersaulting relentlessly under your rod – often getting off the hook as a result.

The shock absorber

To absorb shock when hooking-up or fighting fish on a short line – We use a fairly soft tippet at the end of our leader. We prefer old fashion mono lines like Maxima Chameleon or Original Stren – Other soft lines from Maxima and some of Berkley monofilament could also be used as tippet on a leader for dry fly fishing

See the tippet we have in our fly tackle store

Sinking leader when fishing dry fly!

airflo polyleader til riffling hitchWe know we will raise a few eyebrows when we recommend that you use a sinking leader for your dry fly fishing! – Newer the less we advise you to buy a couple of hover poly leaders. The hover leader is the leader classified one step above intermediate.

The hover poly leader does not sink particularly much or fast it will merely stay just below the surface during the short duration of a drift with a dry fly. We have found that sub-surface leader like the hover leader is less likely to cast – frightening shadows – than a similar floating leader otherwise could do

The poly leader will also outperform a standard nylon leader when it comes to casting big bulky dry flies… We use a 5 – 6-foot hover leader combined with a 50 – 75 cm. (20 – 30 inch.) a piece of Maxima mono-filament

Clear Fly fishing leader – called; Hover or intermediate from Airflo is super leaders for dry fly and riffling hitch fishing..

fly fishing leader sizes and Snell`s Window

The technical term for the way in which underwater life sees thing above water is called Snell `s Window. According to this knowledge fish see`s things on the surface through a cone with a width of 96 degrees. It is at the edge of this cone that we want to position our dry fly – The edge of the cone is also a place where the fish can see and be intimidated by our leader. Since the angle of the cone is approximate. 45 degrees we will roughly be able to calculate where the edge of Snell `s Window is situated. A little calculation will show that e.g, a fish sitting at the bottom of 6 foot of water (1.8 meters) will have the edge of Snell` s Window 6 foot in front of him … Thus, you will want to use longer leaders if you are fishing with dry flies in deeper water than if you fish at low rivers. For most of my fishing in Finnmark (Northern Norway) I use a quite short leader at 6 to 7 feet

Fishing gin clear rivers in Nothern Norway Photo Jesper Fohrmann

Anglers fishing clear rivers in Scandinavia and elsewhere have their special choice of fly colors

Dark Green Bomber™

We have made a few custom colour flies for the upcoming season. The Dark Green Tube Bomber is one of them. This particular green with its brown hackle has proven to be one of the best flies anglers can bring to rivers in Finnmark (Northern Norway) – and Westland region (mid Norway) – It could be the green tinted colour of some rivers – or just the fact that a lot of the fishing ground on these rivers run through green dressed forrest..The Dark Green Tube Bomber comes in 3 sizes See all 3 sizes in the shop  Buy salmon & steelhead flies

The Tube Rat

This is actually a pike pattern that we designed for Danish pike anglers – but quite a few anglers fishing Taimen and Brook trout have already made orders for their upcoming season. Build on our special hitch tube this fly will be a super-light alternative to those big rodent imitations tied on hopeless big long shank hooks. Leverage problems will be solved with this Tube Rat, that will hold a variety of different short shank hooks.

Tube Rat Big - The Fishmadman way of tying flies that otherwise would have been tied on enormous hooks

The Tube Rat also comes in a smaller version: Tube Baby Rat See Tube Rats in the shop  Buy salmon & steelhead flies

Brooks Sunray Shadow

Sunray Shadow Developed by UK angler Raymond Brooks who fished the Norwegian Salmon River Laerdal through the ’70s and ’80s. The fly was so efficient that Mr Brooks had it patented… Today the pattern has ended and anglers on salmon rivers from north to south will have this deadly pattern in their box.

We have made the fly in two custom editions as well as the original version.. Comes in two sizes

How to work the Sunray for salmon

This long-haired fly much in line with the Collie Dog pattern works perfectly for aggressive freshly run summer salmon – Latter in the season it will work miracles on big male salmon especially in the hour just before and after dusk… The Sunray Shadow is fished down and across as many other regular salmon flies but at times it is much better to fish this fly at high-speed, by casting it straight across and pulling it as fast as you can with both hands… It just seems to be to an irresistible snack to salmon

salmon fly below https://www.fishmadman.com/sub-flies Sat, 11 Feb 2012 08:59:04 +0000 http://www.fishmadman.com/pages/?page_id=813

Hello!  On the following page on wet fly fishing for salmon and steelhead, we will try to sum up some of the traditional and modern features and techniques found in wet fly fishing today used by both groups of anglers to present their flies correctly.

Salmon fly below the surface

Jock Scott fly made for salmon

Above: The artificial wet-fly icon: The Jock Scott – allegedly conceived by the ghillie Jock Scott – on his way to Norway accompanying his employer Lord Scott. Here is a 6/0 version from the hands of the fly-tying company: Redpath Kelso-on-tweed. Such big single-iron flies were used by British anglers in the early season as late as the 1940s when tube flies replaced them, and later again, big Waddington shanks.

Sometimes surface fishing is the ideal choice. One will be able to out-fish all other anglers by dead-drifting a small Bomber dry fly or trailing a tiny riffling hitch tube fly as opposed to using a subsurface salmon fly technique – But more often, it is the angler using the conventional wet salmon fly that will have the best chance of catching the fish of the day.

Salmon fly – sub or surface ? Even though it isn’t all that obvious… surface and wet-fly fishing is worlds apart.

10 inches below could be the prime depth for summer fishing

10 inches below the surface, is a well-established guideline for the depth to fish a conventional salmon fly during summer. This is the type of fishing most anglers expect to fish and buy fly fishing gear to fish – This depth could be achieved by using a full floating line, a salmon fly tied on a single, treble or double iron, and a 9 – 10 foot leader – Add a medium or big river in summer conditions with a fair flow of + 9 degrees Celcius water (48,5 Fahrenheit), and that should bring the fly close to the desired depth of 10 inches below.

This is not always the case and the setup as described before will probably get you somewhere between the surface and 10 inches below – and sometimes you may have to look for the fish a bit deeper

Salmon fly fishing

10 inches below the surface – is not always the case – More often the fly will be in the area between the surface and 10 inches below

Guidelines for the use of various sub surface fly fishing techniques

To be truly successful throughout the season anglers may have to fish for salmon and steelhead in different places in the water column – Numerous manuals have been written on this intriguing subject and this could very well be yet another set of guidelines – so before I start I would like to make a few notes on details in salmon fishing that may have a great influence on your choice of fly line and flies this will not be a fixed manual but a set of guidelines based on experiences I have had over the years with river height the temperature in the water water flow and how all this may progress during the season.

Depth of the river

Depth of the river – The river depth is of great significance when you chose the sinking rate of fly line and flies especially in those cold months in the beginning and at the end of the salmon season where the fly must be presented at specific lies at a specific depth – But sinking lines are not always necessary – even in extremely cold June – July rivers ( 1 – 2 degrees Celcius 33 – 35 degrees Fahrenheit) salmon may come to the surface and snatch a fly in a low river (1 – 2 meter 3- 6 foot deep) and I have friends that never would think of changing their trusted floating line that they used to the end of the season the previous year.

Even in a extremely cold June – July river Atlantic salmon may come to the surface and snatch a fly

At the same river and time, other anglers may use sinking lines of various densities and unmistakably also hook up with salmon – it goes to show that fresh running salmon are active hunters with great stamina and appetite that can move a lot in high waters – in fact, it could be highly beneficial to have more than one setup of equipment ready in times of high water.

Salmon fly fishing with tube fly

Big + 90 centimetres (+ 36 inches) salmon caught in 2 degrees Celcius ( 35,6 Fahrenheit) water on a full floating line – in an extremely turbulent part of a shallow river – Shallow rivers don’t always dictate sinking lines even though the water temperature is low

Late salmon fishing

salmon on Frances fly

Late-season fishing in low-water rivers with a mixture of dark and silver fish can make a fascinating sport and is also one of the most demanding forms of river fishing anglers can participate in. Fish can be extremely picky, and anglers would have to spend time by the river to learn the ways of the fish. The low water narrows down the area where the fish can see the fly, and precise presentation and tiny details in flies are the names of the game.

Caught on a dwarf, Frances fly – An excellent fly for tricky presentation

Late season fishing in low water rivers: Even a small change in the depth the fly is fished can be of great importance

salmon on frances fly

Salmon from October – caught in a shallow Scottish river – In the late end of the season temperatures can drop to a few degrees Celsius (35 – 36 degrees Fahrenheit) and even a tiny change in the depth the fly is fished can be of great importance – Use different density sinking poly leaders to find the right depth – Here I used a floating line and a 10 foot super fast sinking leader

Early salmon fishing

Shooting headsEarly salmon fishing and – choice of line and technique. Early fishing for Atlantic salmon has a different meaning to anglers fishing in Norway, the southern part of Scandinavia and Scotland. In Scotland, the season starts as early as February – March and heavy sinking lines and bigger flies are considered to be the correct approach if one wants to connect with salmon in cold water and air temperatures that might be below the river temperature. In Norway, the early season in June and the beginning of July could easily mean low temperatures in the river and, at the same time, high temperatures in the air. Sun and heat might bring further cold melting water from snow and ice. Early fishing conditions in Norway could easily change, and it is well worth getting different line densities to the river.

Photo: I prefer to use full lines for my riffling hitch and dry fly fishing – but I consequently use shotting head systems when I fish sunken lines and high water early in the season – The ability to change lines fast and easily during my fishing is second to none with the shooting head system.

It is not known exactly why the Atlantic salmon prefer bigger flies in the very early part of the season – and then smaller flies as the water temperature rises

Garry on waddington shankFish slow and deep in the early season. Salmon is often found in the back end or deeper part of the pool, and the fly is best presented from the bottom and up to the middle bit of the water column; this could be done using high-density sinking lines. Often bigger flies are used in the early part of the season, and it is not known why bigger flies work better at the beginning of the season – but as the temperature rises during the spring and summer months, smaller flies become the better choice. As a general rule, flies are fished slowly with the early fish, and anglers should use a smaller angle on their cast as opposed to summer fishing, where a steep curve and fast flies could be desirable.

Photo: Various sizes of  Garry flies tied on Waddington shank – biggest is 80 millimetres + 3 inches. Favoured flies for early season fishing – or when the river is in a spate

The right salmon fly

The right salmon flyFishing with an artificial fly is the art of deception and we are actually in the game to cheat fish – animals ranking lower on the ladder of evolution than a toad. This doesn’t mean that fish are easy prey, and anglers will humbly practise their skills as fly fishers throughout their lives.

Getting the right salmon fly for your fishing is certainly an axis point in the world of salmon and steelhead fishing – so obviously, it is well worth spending time & money on making or buying the ultimate flies. Generally, one can look upon the salmon fly as a miniature aeroplane or, rather, a submarine. The fly’s ability to manoeuvre and finally deceive the fish will very much depend upon or be determined by the river you Salmon fly under waterhave come to fish – so the salmon fly has to be able to perform in the river. Hairs, feathers, colours and details in the fly will work with you to complete the illusion –  and if convincing enough, you might hook up with Mr Fish.

Making the perfect illusion

Deceiving a salmon into taking a fly is directly comparable to a magician making the perfect illusion – Use your mind to imagine how your fly is looking at the end of the leader – this could help you succeed

Catching salmon on a flyWhen fishing on the surface, it is the element of commotion or entrapment that is the master key to success – more so than the actual details within the fly – We will work with different materials to mimic the insect that is entrapped in the surface – and details and colour could be of great importance when doing so.

If you’re using a conventional wet salmon fly, you will have to sell the whole package to convince the salmon or trout to bite the hook. It could be small details in the fly – the way you fish the fly – or the way the fly is moved by the currents that could be the thing that catches the attention of the fish – but it all has to come together as one unit at the end – and that is not always easy.

Salmon flies during the season

Every river I have fished has had its own set of salmon flies or at least some unique salmon flies designed for that particular river – This only shows that details matter. Not only colours and specific fly-tying material but also the overall design or styling of the fly vary from river to river – something that often is coupled with the river’s specific flow and the particular part of the season you visit the river.

It is always worth listening to the local guys or the shopkeeper in the local fishing tackle shop, to learn what kind of flies go well in the river you have come to fish.

There is some guiding principle on flies. Here are a few important ones

  • Clear rivers – Lightly coloured flies grey/black/White/blue/green
  • Dark-coloured water – Darker-coloured flies Orange/Red/Yellow/black

Cold water bigger flies – Warmer water, smaller flies

  • From 1 – 4 degrees Celcius ( 33 – 40 degrees Fahrenheit), 4 – 3 inches flies
  • From  6 – 9 degrees C. (42 – 48 2 degrees F.) 2 1/4 – 2 inches. flies
  • From 10 – 18 degrees C (50 – 56 degrees F.) 1 3/4 – Minature flies
  • From 12 degrees C. (53 degrees F.) Dry flies and hitch flies become very effective –
  • At 18 degrees C.  (56 degrees F.) Dry fly becomes the prime fly in many rivers.
  • At – 21 – 23 degrees C. (70 – 73 degrees F.) salmon fly fishing becomes tough, to say the least – and flies are best presented early in the morning and in places where the fish lies in the shade throughout the day.
There is no doubt that consumption of larger bait fish at sea is part of the overall success of big salmon in rivers across the Nothern Hemepsfere – but their love for bigger bait could also tie in with their love for bigger flies

Big fish prefer a relatively big fly -

A bold statement – and this is not the whole truth as big fish also get caught on very small flies and everything in between – but it is a fact that many big salmon are caught on bigger flies. One could think that this was a case of anglers thinking; big fish – big chunks of food and therefore generally used big flies on big fish … but ask the seasoned local angler on a Norwegian river what he would tie on if a bigger fish entered the pool – He or she would know that the bigger fish have a weakness for bigger flies and would quickly change the # 12 to a # 6 – # 4 or even a size 2 – 1

We can only guess why this is the case – and my guess would follow some of the facts we see in surveys done on The food Atlantic salmon feed on at sea – There is no doubt that consumption of larger bait fish at sea is part of the overall success of big salmon in rivers across the Nothern Hemisphere – but their love for bigger bait could also tie in with their passion for bigger flies

The fly with a long wing

Salmon on sunray shadow tube flyA salmon fly as this Sunray Shadow  or Collie Dog stripped fast across the pool is candy to a fresh silver salmon steaming straight in from the high seas; the local resident fish will most likely pass on such an offering – but return with this salmon fly on a dark evening at the end of August then that same fish probably won’t say no to a Sunray Shadow.

Here is a 100-centimetre Jully salmon caught on a Collie Dog salmon fly.
When fresh fish is moving fast – it can be well worth the effort to speed up the salmon fly by pulling in line – as fast as you can!

Do the fish see the fly as food or as an intruder? That is not always obvious but as the season progress your choice of  salmon fly and tactics might have to change profoundly.

Different flies for different fish

Fresh running salmon steaming in from the feeding grounds at high seas – some with a fresh memory of their greedy life at sea, others could have been eating on their way to the estuary or river mouth – These are as aggressive as they get and the type of fish most anglers will come to know – Fresh fish are an “easy” catch. It is often this type of salmon that anglers tie flies to catch. – but salmon fishing is so much more than fresh running salmon – ordinarily, the angler will encounter a broad line-up of salmon in different stages of life, and it is worth preparing for a different range of fish hidden away in varying parts of the river.
Fresh fish are an “easy” catch and it is often this type of salmon that anglers tie flies to catch.
salmon on Frances tube fly

Fresh, curious, aggressive like this male salmon, is the fish we frequently connect with – but the river holds fish in many stages of life. Some will never touch your fly – others may only be fishable for a few minutes during the day. Salmon fly fishing gets interesting when you find the right flies and fishing methods for all these “different” fish.

The resident fish

The resident fish is the fish that has been in the river for some time – that has lost some of its aggressiveness – It has travelled through pools and rapids – it might even have been out in the estuary again. It could also be a fish that has settled in a holding pool. That is starting to take colour. Who will jump when new fish enter his pool and occasionally rise to the trail of drifting insectsThis is a fish well in tune with the surrounding environment, and it will take a special salmon fly to hook him – A fly that will work just right in that specific area – The local guy who comes to fish this spot…might have just that salmon fly in his box. Most likely, it will be a small neutral looking fly that in pose resembles some of the aquatic life the fish may encounter through the long days of waiting.

Stale fish, like the fish in the photo, is the salmon most anglers will meet when they visit the river during summer and early autumn – They are hard to catch. Still, the observant angler may notice that these fish have various levels of attention span where they act differently and may bite a fly. It could be when early morning slides into a sunny day – In the last hours of light – When new fish enter the pool and their patch. Small sub-flies that drift towards them like an insect  – A small heavy fly that suddenly appears and rise to the surface near their patch – can result in a bite. This particular fish was caught on a Micro Conehead Frances tube fly # 16

Micro conehead frances tube fly

an excellent fly – This version of the Frances fly tied on a small aluminium tube. Fitted with a small brass conehead is an outstanding salmon fly. All the details come together in this fly that fishes at its best when presented drifting towards the fish, ultimately to be lifted in the last second. .

Flies for difficult salmon

Another resident fish I spent an entire June day to catch – It was occasionally feeding – on something – not visible to me – It had looked and refused my tiny Frances fly several times, but after hours of casting and presentation, it suddenly took the fly – like it was the first time it had ever seen a fly.

Male Autom salmon North Esk

Photo: Pure Uncut Resident Evil: One aggressive male salmon from The Viaduct Pool at the North Esk in Scotland… A fish that probably had been in the river – and maybe in this particular pool all summer. It has most likely seen 101` salmon fly and know every rock in the pool – A truly formidable animal and one of the strongest freshwater fish you can catch on a fly rod. This one hooked on a tiny 10-millimetre Black & Orange tied on a copper tube, fished on an intermediate line, and a super-fast sinking leader – If you want to target these “crocodiles” it is worth fishing close to the bottom and to the middle bit of the river – Aggressive male fish like this one take up residence in classical pools at those classical spots where you would expect him to be.

Some flies work better during the end of the season

There is no doubt that special fly patterns become more efficient during the season – This could vary from river to river, but a fly like the General Practitioner seems to have an increasing effect on late-running salmon in Norwegian rivers

Interesting studies into salmon feeding at high seas in the Northeast Atlantic by; biologists Jacobsen, J. A., and Hansen, L. P.  show that shrimps accounted for 95% of the food in number but only about 30% by weight, 66% of the stomach content was fish, particularly mesopelagic fish. Some larger pelagic fish such as herring, blue whiting, and mackerel were also part of the dies. Fish and crustacean prey accounted for 96% of the weight of all prey taken by salmon, but the report also mentions a small percentage of  Birds and bird remains to have been part of the salmon stomach content!!

Pandalus borealis salmon and steelhead food

Prawn and shrimp flies

Salmon and steelhead feeding habits and preference for prey have probably evolved through millions of years. Some of these – taste for foods – can be seen in using salmon flies along our rivers.
It is well-known that a prawn salmon fly pattern like the General Practitioner flies works much better in some rivers than others.
The British salmon, particularly the Irish salmon, seem to be more interested in prawn flies. More so than salmon in some regions of Scandinavia … Saying this, I recognize that it is hard to say if most of our sub-flies are interpreted by salmon as prawns and shrimps. We, as fly tiers, work unpremeditated with the prawn theme all the time.
Above: The Pandalus Borealis or the North Sea Prawn as it is commonly known – This crustacean embodies the red prawn flies we passionately like to tie – but the North Sea Prawn is probably just one of many crustaceans that the salmon will eat at sea.
The studies by biologists Jacobsen, J. A., and Hansen, L. P (see link from earlier) show that the salmon food primarily consists of much smaller and less flashy crustaceans than the Pandalus Borealis. Read more about the Pandalus Borealis.

Generla Practitioner fly

Above: The GP or General Practitioner – another icon in the world of salmon fly fishing – Perhaps most of our sub-flies are interpreted by salmon as prawns… and we, as fly tiers, work unpremeditated with the prawn theme all the time.

Presentation, presentation and presentation

Flies is not everything – I have friends who give little attention to flies and place reliance on their ability to present the fly in such a way that the fish will bite – I believe it is a matter of both.

presenting the fly to salmon

Fishing for salmon and steelhead is a matter of presentation – much more so than the actual fly pattern. The right salmon fly doesn’t do the trick alone – and the angler has to develop a long line of skills to be successful throughout the season.

Orthodox salmon fly fishing is often explained as; Cast across on a 45 ° angle – and then fish the fly to your bank – Take a step and a new cast... But fishing with a sub salmon fly is so much more – and to be truly successful in this sport – the angler – the fly and the river have to become one.

Above:  Fishing for salmon and steelhead is very much a matter of presentation – in time, you will learn how to present the fly near those spots where fish are lying. The design of the fly, coupled with the presentation, should come into one and complete the deception.

A dedicated surface hunter

Now that you have read a great deal about wet-fly fishing I thought it was appropriate to end this page with a link to the surface – because although salmon could be caught deep in the river every day of the season – The same Atlantic salmon could come right up to the surface and snatch your bait. This quality makes salmon fishing, especially fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, fascinating. Seeing big fish unfold from the darkness of the water will spellbind everyone that ever sees it, and a new salmon fly angler could be born in a fraction of a second.

Surface activity. The Atlantic salmon parr is probably the most surface-orientated species in the Salmonidae family. As soon as insects start to hatch, you will see them chasing food on the surface – Anglers trolling at sea for salmon will also be well aware of the salmon that hunt near the surface – keeping dedicated surface plugs and spoons behind the boat for such fish.

A bright summer salmon has taken a white Tube Bomber – Fresh silver salmon can be just as eager to take a dead-drifting dry fly – as they would chase a big black Sunray Shadow.

Surface fly fishing and tube fly is the anchor point in Fishmadman – Through our own passion for top water fishing  for salmon and trout we hope we will be able to share some interesting highlight of  this intriguing fly fishing sport

What is fishmadman.com?

Fishmadman is a company made by anglers for anglers.

We started out in 2008 as an Internet page collecting information on surface fishing for Atlantic salmon and steelhead.

Our goal was to make surface fishing, particularly dry fly fishing for salmon, popular in Scandinavia. We also aim to make the tube fly part of the North American angler’s range of fly patterns

Top water creativity – From our shop

Today Fishmadman manufacture a broad selection of flies mainly for surface fishing. We also design tubes for tube fly fishing and other unique fly-tying material.

Things we have worked with

White Tube Bomber

1995 The first floating tube fly

We fished the rivers of Scandinavia with conventional dry flies every year. Still, in the mid 90´s, Jesper Fohrmann designed a new set of dry flies tied on a tube – The design was made as a consequence of the problems he was having with drowning dry flies fished on a big turbulent river in Northern Norway.

Here: Bomber dry fly tied on a plastic tube – a very different tube fly!

Styling The Tube Bomber

Different tube fly designs

We developed a long line of salmon dry flies that would suit the many different rivers in Scandinavia.

Contact with anglers from the East coast of Canada meant that we also made versions of Tube Bombers that would fit North American rivers.

tube fly tubing

Tube fly products – a matter of dedication

2009 Designing a unique tube for fly tying

Tube used for tube fly is rarely produced for fly tying and fishing flies – Often, it is a by-product made for something completely different.

Tying big dry flies on tubes, we were pushing the limit to what run-of-the-mill tubes could be used for, and not even the best tubes weren’t good enough for our production.  Ultimately we started designing our hard tube in 2009 – A expensive but rewarding project that inspired us to take things even further:

tube fly design

2011 We made the ultimate tube for Riffling Hitch and Wake flies

Fishmadman Riffling Hitch Tube  Is yet another specialized tube fly tube we have designed for our Riffling Hitch and wake flies – Again, we regard this as the best tube on the market – nothing less.. The tube is firm but still soft enough to withstand anglers inserting hooks in the rear of the tube fly.

Absolutely “low-memory” properties within the plastic compound ensure the tube will fall back into place after removing the hook.

(our hitch fly design does not involve a hook guard – the hook goes straight into the tube)

The special plastic formula used for the tubes also prevents the tube from cracking up in challenging temperatures.

Wake fly design

2012 we launch our wake fly series

In 2012, we launched our wake fly series for steelhead and salmon.

Small dens wake flies for salmon fishing and bigger wake flies for steelhead fishing, all tied on our fantastic Riffling Hitch tube 3.2 millimetres –

Together with steelheaders and guides from steelhead lodges in Oregon and BC, We had been working on these tube flies for some seasons before launching them – We had to make sure that the transition from regular hook patterns to patterns tied on a tube would work – They worked better than we could ever have dreamed of. We hope many anglers will try this new way of skating tube fly patterns for salmon and steelhead.

Iridescent closed-cell foam for fly tying

For 2014 a new type of Iridescent closed-cell foam for bug´s

In correlation with the development of wake flies for steelhead in 2012, we made a new type of closed-cell foam that we also decided to share with other anglers. Softer foam than typically found will enable you to tie tiny bugs.

Monster Tube Caddis

1995 Caddisfly imitation for Atlantic salmon

The Monster Tube Caddis ™ was designed in 1995. This summer was a big year for the caddisfly of the limnephilidae familyNormally the Atlantic salmon is not known to eat anything on their way to the spawning grounds – but these fish in the very north of Norway were feasting away on the wealth of insects, and an imitation of the caddisfly was needed.

Like Lee Wulff in the late ’20s had designed his White Wulff as a huge version of a mayfly – so did, Jesper Fohrmann also create a caricature-like version of the caddisfly insect. This big caddisfly caricature has proven to be an excellent dry fly for salmon.

Bomber hook ?

Solving problems with leverage

Using thin tubes instead of long shank hooks for dry flies and other surface flies made the world of surface fishing much different.

We use tubes that could be fitted with small short shank wide gape carp hooks that hook the fish perfectly.

The tube does not work as a lever as the long shank hook so often will do – and upon hooking the fish, the hook often becomes detached from the tube – enabling you to unhook the fish with greater ease.

Tying dry flies on a tube also made dry flies that would perform much differently to those tied on a long shank hook, making them easier to cast and present  – a decrease in weight by up to + 30 % also made them float better.

2010 We made the best hook guard on the market

In 2010, we designed a new hook guard that wouldn’t take in water as opposed to the silicone hook guard we had used.

Silicone tubing will take in up to 15 % water – so it was not quite the perfect tube for dry and wake flies. We worked with people producing high-end pharmaceutical equipment and finally made tubing that would suit all our needs.

Zebra Sunray Shadow

Tube flies below the surface

We also work with tube fly design for sub-fly fishing – it could be big Sunray Shadow flies to pull cross current or tiny tubes to fish in the surface layer…  Overall, we try our best to cover those aspects of salmon and trout fly fishing that interest us.

All of our sub-surface flies are tied on our Riffling Hitch tube

ZEBRA GOAT

2012 and a new line of fly tying material:  Sunray Zebra Shadow ™

In 2012, we designed a new material for the win of salmon flies. It is a Himalayan Goat with bands  – We needed the material for big Sunray Shadow flies and took the time and effort to develop this product to be ready for fly tiers at salmon and steelhead rivers.

Frances Fly box

2015 we started our Frances fly project

Doing what we think is best is to develop utterly perfect salmon and steelhead flies that our friends and we would tie on the leader. Such flies are the series of micro Frances flies we have made on Partridge hooks – Long crispy feelers – Specially dyed Icelandic wool for the body – Silver plated wire for the rib – Hair from Tanuki Fox dyed by us….hair is from the paws of the animal to give the best texture – See them in the shop
