How to work the Micro Frances Conehead flies

Frances conehead salmon fly

Our small Frances Conehead flies (8 and 10 millimetres big) are tied on an aluminium tube with a tiny brass cone-head giving them just the proper density. Small horns from Chinese boar and a skirt made out of hair from the Tanuki fox make this fly very attractive – The Frances fly family is probably one of the most versatile flies available. Tiny miniature crustation-like creatures like our Micro Frances series into heavy versions tied on a long copper tube – all designed to be fished uniquely.
I have enjoyed fishing for many years with the tiny conehead versions we do at Fishmadman. As for other Frances flies, I like to fish them drifting towards the fish, a technique you can use on many different flies but a technique that is incredibly productive with these weighted micro conehead flies.
To show you how I do, I have made some crude sketches to give you a rough idea.
fishing salmon on Frances fly

Position the Frances fly a meter (3 foot) or more in front of the position where you expect the salmon (or trout) to be – Keep your rod high at the end of the cast.

frances conehead fly - how to fish it

Lower your rod and let the fly sink while it drifts towards the lie of the fish. Don’t worry…with time; you will become an expert at this.

When you believe your fly is near the spot where the fish lies – Keep the line tight, and the fly should rise to the surface – and the fish will most likely cease it

Striped Bass on a surface fly

Daniel Wells is an experienced steelhead angler that has moved to Massachusetts where he has found sport in the striped bass fishing in estuaries, the surf, and a unique fishery, The Cape Cod Canal. Daniel soon realized that the Cape Cod Canal is one of the toughest environments to fly fish, but he found out that it could be done with very heavy Skagit gear. Daniel has been trying to design flies that are specific for the Canal with the focus on waking flies as the canal is moving around 4-5 knots and can have excellent surface feeds when the timing of fast current and sunrise coincide.
Still, in the infancy of Daniels development of these flies, we were proud to deliver some of our riffling hitch tube that Daniel has designed some of his initial striped bass surface flies on. Flies that are light and relatively easy to cast on double hand salmon gear.
We can only say we are looking forward to your season and hope that your fly design has spawned more striped bass anglers to pick up the double hand rod and try out your surface flies… To contact Daniel in regards to his wake fly design – You may contact him through his Instagram profile here

Tube flies is the big thing in Europa and salmon, trout and Northern pike anglers will readily use tubes for many different fly patterns. Not only do the tubes allow anglers to make big light pattern that is easy to cast on light fly fishing equipment, but the tube fly also gives the angler new ways of presenting the fly as something unique.

salmon on tube fly

Tube fly for difficult situations

As I write this post, I have just returned from an evening fishing at the mouth of the river where I fish – Salmon had just entered on the 6 o’clock tide and as the water was pulling back to the sea. Small and big salmon were settling near the big rocks on the river bed.

As the water is only a few feet deep, I use tube dry flies; tiny Frances shrimp flies and single hook wet fly patterns like Blue Charm and Undertaker in # 12… Today the fish was unwilling and a cold northerly wind blew in from the sea… In such difficult situations, most anglers will pack up and leave. Still, I brought out tiny clear-bodied tube flies with wings made of a few hairs from silver tippet squirrel – I call it the V-FLY, and I fish this micro tube fly as a riffling hitch pattern – Riffling hitch pattern can work wonders in such unfriendly conditions. I soon had the first fish turning for the fly, and almost every fish settling in the shallow pool tried to grab the fly.  Two fish to the tiny V-FLY an hour later had turned this bitterly cold evening into a fantastic day of salmon fishing.

tube fly designWe produce some of the best tubes for tube flies.

As tube fly fishermen, we appreciate perfect tubes for our fishing and fly tying, and we have used countless hours with plastic manufacturers to get the tubes perfect for tube fly production. Most tubes bought in fly fishing shops are made for different purposes than flies and fly fishing. Still, the tubes designed with Fishmadman fit the bill – One such tube is our tube designed for riffling hitch flies such as the simple V-FLY – This is a flexible tube made from a PVC free Polyethylene formula that will hold many different size hooks – withstand harsh weather conditions and a lot of mechanical wear and tear.

Tørflue hilsen fra Per & Jesper

Hvad spiser laks i havet?

Sea fishing for salmon

Native Fish Society - Steelheaden`s redningsmand

Tom Derry En dedikeret sportsfisker

Top-Water specialist Tom Derry

steelhead on wake flyEn fisk er for værdifuld blot at fange blot een gang

Micro Frances fluer

Fluemønstret du må have i din flueæske!

salmon on frances flyHvis alt andet fejler

Prøv dem i denne sæson.

Fishmadman newsletter

Hello fly fisherman and welcome to another Fishmadman newsletter

This time we are proud to present something quite unique.

Dry fly regards from Per & Jesper

  • We took the time to collect images and information on the food Atlantic salmon feed on out on the high seas. We read different reports on the subject and obtained pictures of the animal salmon would have eaten.
  • Read about the Native Fish Society, a non-profit organization that advocates for the recovery of wild, native fish in the United States Pacific Northwest.
  • Our NEW page on tubes and how to use them in fly tying.

What do salmon eat at high seas?

Sea fishing for salmon

Fly fishing for salmon is to some degree still a riddle – and anglers will spend countless hours fishing over seemingly uninterested fish that have left a greedy, a la carte life at sea to return to their place of birth, fully nourished and with little or no need or desire for sustenance…Suddenly – and with no reasonable explanation – the fish will rise from the bottom to grab your small fly.

Is it hunger, a memory of food or just frustration that triggers this irrational event – We cant really tell but it inevitably has to do with the behaviour and characteristics of the food salmon has been feeding on for millions of years –

Follow us to see the treats on the salmon menu carte as we delve deeper into the mind of this most demanding and frustrating of gastronomes.

Rarely seen images…

It has been an eye-opening experience for us to uncover the information on salmons’ feeding behaviour at sea – and we think you will be equally entertained when you see the images of these rarely seen critters.

Salmon are opportunistic feeders

A common denominator in all the evidence we have read about salmon feeding behaviour is that Atlantic salmon are opportunistic feeders that will eat the food at a given location and time.

Shrimps are popular with salmon – but fish was the primary source of protein

One of the surveys done by scientists in the North Atlantic showed that fish could be the bulk diet in weight – but shrimps could account for a staggering 95% of the food in numbers.

Native Fish Society - The Steelhead liberator

Over the years of fly fishing, Per Fischer and I have met some very dedicated people working with fish conservation. Mr. Tom Derry is one of them. Tom is a director in a private not for profit foundation that works to restore runs of wild steelhead and the rivers they live in throughout the Pacific Northwest in North America.

Tom Derry A dedicated angle

We have come to know Tom Derry from the Native Fish Society through our mutual passion for surface flies and top-water fishing.

We have recovered some wild fish populations while practising catch and release; it’s the right thing to do!

Top-water steelheader Mr. Tom Derry

A passion for fishing

Growing up in Oregon, Tom´s passion for fishing is fierce.
My earliest memories are of fishing with my Dad and Grandpa. Fishing has been
a lifelong passion of mine, and in recent years my interest has turned to help recover wild fish populations throughout the Pacific Northwest. I have worked at the Native Fish Society for twelve years as a River Steward and Director of Wild Steelhead Funding. My job is securing funding for our River Steward program and advocacy work. I have met and fished with many anglers who want to give back financially for all the pleasure fish, and fishing has brought them. A side benefit of my work is that it has allowed me to fish some of the best waters in the world. “

steelhead on wake flyA Fish Is Too Valuable To Catch Just Once

With Salmon and Steelhead populations at less than three percent of historical numbers throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Native Fish Society also promotes and enforces catch-and-release fishing to ensure anglers can continue fishing with minimal impact on the fishery. A Quote from Lee Wulff says it all, “A Fish Is Too Valuable To Catch Just Once”.

A passion for fish

Native Fish Society works to stop habitat degradation before it starts, challenge commercial and sport fisheries that over-harvest, improve passage or encourage the removal of hydroelectric dams, and highlight the negative impacts from hatchery programs. .

The Micro Frances Fly

A must have fly pattern for salmon!

When you have seen the images and read the story on What salmon eat on high seas – You might better understand why the Frances fly has become one of the most famous salmon flies ever made – This special-looking fly is used widely on rivers across the North Atlantic – in both cumbersome carrot-looking versions and tiny variants – light as insects.

We have been working on getting some tiny ones ready for the upcoming season – All tied meticulously with a notion for the details we like in this pattern.

  • Thin, tapered and vibrant antennas
  • Partridge’s famous outpoint  * X2B hooks
  • Crisp hackle from Whiting
  • The right colour, red wool from Iceland

* The Partridge X2B has unique hooking abilities perfect for the tough skin inside the mouth of salmon.

Tiny # 18 Frances fly in the mouth of an October salmon.

We have tied the flies on Partridge X2B # 18 – 16 and 14 hooks, and in addition to these feather-light flies, we have also made an absolute miniature tube fly version tied on our 3.2-millimetre tube – perfect for small treble or single hooks

salmon on frances flyIf all else fails

There is something magical about these tiny Frances flies – They seem to evoke the biting behaviour in salmon in such a way that some anglers swear to this dwarf pattern for most of their fishing – Other anglers I know keep a box with this fly as a last resort – if all else fails – I like to use the dwarf Frances flies when the river drops away during summer and fish stop and stay in slowish water – I consistently tie this fly on when I fish autumn salmon in Scottish rivers – Those late silver runners can’t resist these tiny shrimp imitations.

Try them out this season –

Welcome to Fishmadman and the world of fly fishing with wake, riffling hitch and dry flies

Fly fishing for salmon and steelhead on the surface is probably the most exciting sports humans can venture into – This form of fly fishing has become increasingly popular in the last 60 years – but anglers have most likely been fishing steelhead and salmon on the top since the birth of fly fishing

We collect information about our sport – and design some of the best flies for the job

READ MORE ABOUT OUR MISSION

THINGS WE WORK WITH

On the Fishmadman site, we will highlight the essence of surface fly fishing. We hope to do so by showing you technique, know-how and some of the many fascinating flies made for our sport.

SURFACE FLY PATTERNS MADE ON TUBE ARE OUR SPECIALITY

Dry fly – Wake fly – Skaters – Riffling Hitch fly tied on the tube will give you a feather-light solution that stays on top and perform better than most of their counterparts tied on long shank hooks. We have multiple pages on Fishmadman showing you how to do such tube flies.

THE WORLD OF THE BOMBER FLY

During summer, we stay at salmon rivers in Norway – and when the conditions are right, we will tie on a dry fly like a salmon Bomber. You will find Bombers at the river bank cut into shape on our pages.

Just like we make flies tuned to the rivers we fish – other anglers will have honed trout and salmon Bombers just for their district, river and even unique pools – We try continuously to collect this information and publish it on our pages and blog. Read more

BOMBER DRY FLY ON TUBE

Our Bomber dry flies are tied on a tube. A design we developed in 1995 and still work to refine and perfect. On our pages, you will find detailed illustrations that could aid you in developing your surface flies tied on a tube. Read more

RIFFLING HITCH & WAKE FLY ON TUBE

Riffling Hitch is a technique that emerged during almost a century of fly fishing traditions. Allegedly the method was generated as a coincidence by Canadians – who in Victorian days would have recycled damaged gut-eye flies and tied them directly to the leaders using a series of hitches – Herby the fly could have trailed to the surface, creating the all-important Riffling Hitch wake. Like many other European anglers, we will tie Riffling Hitch flies on a tube and our pages, you will find special Riffling Hitch and wake flies done on our Riffling Hitch tube design – See the comprehensive pages on How to work with tube flies on the surface. Read more

THE TUBE FLY – ANOTHER ACE ON YOUR HAND

The tube fly has been part of the European fly box since the 1940s, and anglers have been developing fly patterns on a tube that would suit different rivers and seasons. A fly tied on a tube could look and work like any other fly tied on a single salmon hook – But it can also be something completely different – with abilities that go beyond any fly you have tried… tap into our vast knowledge base on tube fly know-how – and get another Ace on your hand.

Tubes for tube fly – What to chose http://www.fishmadman.com/tubes-tube-fly Sat, 07 Mar 2015 19:51:27 +0000 http://www.fishmadman.com/?page_id=14279
FlashBack Bug sea trout wake fly

Salmon fishing in Lagan

What is a tube fly?

The tube fly was originally a salmon fly design by The Scotsman Mr Alexander Wanless, who shaped a line of flies on thin lead barrels in the late 1930s.

Mr Alexander Wanless aimed to make a lightweight bait he could fish on his spinning rod with a fixed spool reel. Still today, many anglers use the tube fly on a spinning rod, but more so, the tube fly has become one of the most popular ways of tying salmon and steelhead flies –

In the Swedish Lagan River, many salmon are caught on tube flies. Either on fly gear or, more commonly, on spinning gear. When spinning gear is used, the tube fly is fished close to the bottom on a swinging trace behind a weight.

Tubes for tube fly

flashback bugIn all its simplicity, the tube is merely the vessel that carries the fly pattern; hair, feather, and hook – But the tube with its ways in the water is also an alluring factor in the tube fly pattern, which can be used progressively.

Right; The FlashBack Bug is a steelhead wake-tube fly designed to use the tube’s properties to stay on top of the surface. The fly could also be tied on a hook… but it will be a fly that works differently on the surface than its cousin tied on the tube.

Tube fly patterns – in the future

We believe that tube flies will be the future fly when anglers grasp the many potentials of the various tubes.

Big rodent flies like this Tube Rat from our shop benefit significantly from being tied on a tube versus a hook. The tube rat is a much lighter alternative that is easy to cast even on light gear. The tube fly is not rigid as a big long shank hook, and less fish is lost to problems with leverage

metal tube tube fly

Riffling Hitch Tube (big) 3,2: 2,0 mm. - 1 meter

Tube designed for tube flies

Tube fly-tying equipment is a unique part of the fly-tying kit, and fishing shops here in Europa often carry a large selection of tubes and other specialized equipment for tube flies.

The majority of these tubes are made from plastic substances called PE: Polyethylene or PA Aliphatic polyamides

Danish sea trout flyWith an annual worldwide usage of approximately 80 million tons of Polyethylene; it is not uncommon to find tubes in fishing tackle shops that may have been designed for something completely different from tube flies. Likewise, you may spot some tubes outside fishing shops that could work well in your fly tying.

Right: An 2 1/2 inch Danish seatrout commotion tube fly for nocturnal fishing. Dressed with a soft cone to the front and plastic beads to the body to make it push water

Tubes for tube fly

The cotton swab is a good example of a tube that could work as tubing for tube flies. On the other hand, cotton swabs are just as diverse as the tube-fly tubing you find in shops – and some cotton swabs will easily split and bend, others might float – an exclusive feature you could use for an extraordinary tube fly.

tubefly fishing for salmon

The right tube for the job

Fishing an entire season for Atlantic salmon or steelhead could be a technically demanding affair involving a lot of know-how and special gear.

Here a salmon caught on a Garry tied on a 1 1/2 copper tube – When fishing – the hook is kept in place by a hook guard made of soft plastic tubing tied to the rear of the copper tube. The tube fly will slide freely on the leader when a fish is hooked.

The good, the bad and the ugly tubes

It is unusual that manufactures of tubing write any detail on their product so you often have to do your own technical research to get the right material for your tube flies

Here is a few things to look (out) for

tubes for tube fly

Buy a straight tube for big flies.

Tubing is often kept on giant spools and sold by the kilo – then to be cut up into lengths and resold to anglers. The tubing may keep some of its carvings from its shelf-life – leaving you with slightly bend tubes. As far as we’re concerned, that is a no-no when you’re looking to find tubes to tie long flies on, and we would avoid buying such material as it could give you a bad starting point for your flies – and curved flies could end up twisting your leader

Tube for tube fly

Some tubes crack in cold weather.

Tube flies could easily be the fly you turn to when the weather conditions are at their worst and dropping temperatures – strong currents and heavy leaders obviously will take their toll on your tube flies.

It would be best if you tied your flies on tubing that can withstand temperature changes and mechanical wear – but you may have to compromise as some rigid tubes may crack in cold weather.

Above left: A tube sold as; a tube for Scandinavian tube fly – left in the freezer for 5 minutes – I then tried to insert a hook with this cracking result.

Tubes flies tying

High memory tubes

Avoid tubes that change colour when you bend them – The colour change will tell you that the tube has high memory and properly has difficulty falling back into place after being bent for instance, in the mouth of a fish

tube for fly tying

Too hard tube – to put hooks into

If you rely on putting the hook inside the tube… avoid buying too rigid tubing as this could result in troublesome positioning or repositioning of the hook as the material might not accommodate the hook – Some hard tubes may also split when under pressure and used in cold water (2 – 5 degrees Celsius – 35 – 41 degrees Fahrenheit) –

As a general rule, you can check if your tube is suitable to be used as a place to put your hook – by squeezing the tube firmly between your thumb and index fingers – If you can ovalize the tube slightly…and then have it fall back into its original round shape then` you could have the right tube for the job.

tube fly size

Heavy tube flies

Weighted tubes can get down in fast water – They can also be used during the cold part of the season, October – November, and during the first month of the season – January – March.

Above right: Classical Slipstream tubes from Veniard in England – The tubing inside the metal tube (inner tube) may be frayed or otherwise damaged when used – You can change the inner tube by cutting the ends of – then pulling the inner tube out  – then inserting a new piece of inner-tubing – You can use our 1.8-millimetre tubing for this job.

Tube flies are an English invention designed by Mr Alexander Wanless in the early 1930s. It soon became a popular way of doing flies –

Cutting tube fly tyingSome of the first tube flies made by Alexander Wanless were tied on oblong lead barrels. Mr Wanless used the flies with small hooks on his light spinning gear.

Still today, the heavy sinking tube plays a role in fly fishing; mainly, Atlantic salmon anglers use weighted tubes during the season.

Heavy tube flies in many shapes and sizes.

Scandinavia and Scotland are blessed with fast-running rivers. European anglers have developed a long line of heavy tubes to be used during the season – most of them are designed for summer sport with a floating line and a presentation of the fly some 10 inches below. Many of these microtubes and the conehead on the photo to the right are designed for this purpose…

We aim to present the individual tubes from the photo on this page – during the following year.

Weight is not everything when it comes to surging to the deep – density is an all-important factor – Tubes made of the material tungsten has a density almost 200 % higher than an equivalent copper tube – A real depth charge

tube for tube flies

Light tube fly

Most Scandinavians would choose tube flies for their salmon and trout fishing. The tube fly is convenient and gives us versatility that is hard to beat – But foremost, the tube fly allows the angler to fish big or small fly patterns correctly in all kinds of water.

Micro tube flies

Tying a tube fly for summer conditions

When summer conditions call upon a tiny fly pattern that will work with the most subtle current in the river – you should tie on a micro-tube fly – The fly may be more prominent in volume than a small single-hook pattern and fitted with a hook. It could also weigh more than a single hook pattern – But it also acts much differently.

Left three miniature tube flies tied on different tubing – The two top patterns are tied on relatively soft tubing from a BIC ballpoint pen – hooks in the picture is # 18 – a single hook is # 14

tube fly tying hookguard

Tying a tube fly – Hook guard solutions

The hook guard or hook rest is the extension of the tube that will enable you to hold the hook in place when you cast or fish the fly. Is it not an absolute for all tube flies, and different groups of anglers may have personal opinions and ideas about the use and necessity of this add-on?

I value the hook guard and implement it on many of the tube flies we do in Fishmadman – merely because it is a foolproof solution that reduces the chance of a tangle.

Above left: A soft tubing glued to a thin hard tube with UV glue. A neat way to fixate a hook guard to a tiny tube fly.[hr]

See how to fixate a tiny hook guard on a tube using UV-glue

Stoats tail tube flies

Loose or fixed hook-guard?

Some anglers keep the hook guard loose in their fly box and attach it when they want to use the fly – The lower part of the tube fly is free of material, so the hook guard can easily be slipped on. The apparent advantage of this solution is the option to change the hook guard if it becomes damaged. I think it works neatly on smaller flies like these Stoat Tail tied on # 1/2 aluminium tubes from Veniard

Our 2,2/ 1,2 hook guard is perfect for smaller flies like these. Buy salmon & steelhead flies

 hook-gyard tube fly system

Swinging hook-guard

Anglers in Scandinavia also use this smart kit to keep their hook swinging behind the tube – opposed to setting the hook into a more rigid hook-guard – Here from German Propeller Fly – This version will hold hooks from # 8 – 12

makeing tube flies

Tie-down of hook guard.

If you tie dry flies on tube as we do – we recommend using a hook guard on your fly pattern – the fixated hook will decrease tangle. Initially, you need to make a collar on the tubing, as seen from the photo to the left – You do so by getting the tube near a naked flame – If you use quality PA tubing, the tubing will melt quickly to form a perfect small collar.

hookguard for tube flies

Cut the hook guard at a square angle

Here I have started on a bigger fly on our 1.8 mm. hard tube – I have slipped our bigger 3.0/1.8 mm hook guard on – But I have cut the hook guard at a square 45-degree angle – By doing so, I can reduce the size of the tie-down needed to secure this hook guard.

fly tying tube

Right: I have slid the 2.2/1.2 hook guard onto my 1.4 hard tube. You can see the collar beneath the hook guard – Tie the end of the hook guard and secure it with super-glue or lacquer.

fly tying tube

Finish of with super-glue or lacquer

Micro tube fly

The hook guard works as an integrated part of the body

One fly I have used repeatedly over the years is this 1/5 # (0.5 cm.) micro-conehead tube fly – I tie it in all kinds of colours and patterns, and it is just such a neat fly to tie and use. It may look intricate, but it is a very easy fly to tie. I think some of this micro tube fly´s success is down to the fact that it has a semi-see-through body that is accomplished by running the hook guard onto the body of the fly – Check this super fly out on our page dedicated to the. Kinaber Killer

Tube fly construction

Building the tube fly

Modern tube flies in Scandinavia are often built from various sections of tube – and getting dimensions and tubing right is a bit like building LEGO.

Here I have assembled our 1.8 mm. hard tube with our 3.0/1.8 mm Riffling Hitch tube – In this case, the riffling hitch tube is used as a hook guard, but a hook guard of soft tubing may also be slid onto the rear of the riffling hitch tube to accommodate bigger hooks than the Owner Chinu # 1/0 shown in the photo. Coneheads are often used to the front of the fly – fixed with a tiny drop of glue or Zap-A-Gap – Finally, a collar is formed on the tube by heating it with a naked flame.

Tube fly needle

Specially designed tube fly-tying needles.

Over the years, we have happily used regular sowing needles for our tube fly tying – we have also promoted this inexpensive solution through our shop. Still, we have had a problem getting suitable sowing needles for the tubing we sell, so we decided to produce our design of tube fly-tying needles.

Four different needles to choose from

We made needles that would fit the tubing we sell – from the thinnest 1.4-millimetre tubings to the biggest 3.2 mm. tubing we use for big Sunray Shadow flies.

Tube fly for coastal sea trout

l-rig-sea trout tube fly

The tube fly a different still water fly
Sea-trout tube fly have been tested and described several times during the development of coastal fly fishing here in Scandinavia but it’s never really become popular. That’s a shame as the tube fly offers fly-fisher a different opportunity to present a fly to the sea trout that can be quite selective in its pursuit of prey. Inshore fishing with fly  and saltwater flies for sea trout is basically the same as we know from put and take fishing in fresh water … where the angler must bring life and movement to the fly –  with a little ingenuity tube flies can easily be shaped to fit into this type of fishing

Difficult to hook
Anyone who has ever tried to fish for sea-trout in rivers, estuaries or in the ocean know that sea-trout can be notoriously difficult to hook and small needle sharp hooks have for generations been the best tool for this difficult job.

The L-RIG may double your hook-up ratio
Small treble hooks are superior for hooking sea-trout  – and the easiest way to exploit this is to replace the traditional single hook flies with a coastal tube fly, which allows the angler to tie on a small treble hook – either fixed or loose.
The loose treble has been the starting point for interesting studies that show that you can increase the amount of hooked sea trout up to 40 – 50% by mounting your hook in a so-called L- RIG *  It’s Jens Bursell, editor of Fisk & Fri, which has developed the L-RIG and On his website you can read more about the L- RIG and how to use it

Ancient fishing lure

To deceive and catch fish is an ancient and very important part of human evolution – so important that we are to this day still fascinated by and drawn to fishing activities.

When we saw this very early lure from Greenland , we knew that we had to show it to you …

The body is made of parts of a crabs claw or hard shell, the hook is beautifully shaped from a piece of iron … In one end there is still remains of a feather ones tied on … which probably makes it a kind of fly-ish … wouldn’t you say

The tube fly granddaddy

Alexander wanles the firs tube fly

Few people know of the man who invented the tube fly – and in most books it is a woman (Mrs. Morawski) who in the 1940´s worked for a fly tying company in Scotland – who is credited for doing the first tube fly.
However, angler and writer Alexander Wanless from England in the early 30’s designed the first tube-fly – Originally created for fishing with spinning rod – which later turned out so perfect for fly rod .

This year, we finally managed to get a picture of the man behind the tube fly.

Tube flies for costal fishing

coastal sea-trout tube fly

Get more sea-trout on the bank – Using a sea-trout tube fly !

Sea trout fishing in estuaries and on the open coast is the big thing in Denmark and many Danish fly fishermen strive to perfect the flies for this fantastic sport. Most coastal sea-trout flies are similar to those used  for still-water fishing in the UK, and anglers need to retrieve the flies to create a sense of life – The take from the sea-trout is often in direct line with the rod and leader and angler need to strike the fish quickly to secure a hook-up.

A conventional fly is not always the best solution and many anglers will lose fish to the fact that the mouth of a trout is a hard and bony place where a normal hook will have a tough time find a secure hold.

Read below about an ingenuous sea-trout tube fly solution that will give you more fish on the bank

trout fishing techniques

Recent surveys in the Danish fishing magazine Fisk & Fri has shown, that only 45 % of all sea-trout contacts on the coast are landed with traditional hook flies in the # 8-2 range. But – by shifting to tube flies with small trebles in the# 12-18 range mounted asymmetrically you could make a landing rate of over 90%.  You could roughly double your average catch.

We at Fishmadman have made a new series of tube flies specially designed to this type of fishing.

Together with some of the best fly designers and pro-tiers we work with we sat down to compile a collection of most wanted coastal sea trout pattern. Famous Scandinavian sea trout pattern like; Grå Frede, Flammen, Rør Tobis, Slagter Fluen, Arizona Shrimp, Nat-Zonker, Zonker Kutling, Snydefluen, Børsten, Polar Magnus was re-modelled into tube flies – weighted and shaped into perfection These are the first commercial coastal tubes flies on the market but they already account for hundreds of fish caught as we and our team has fished with them during the last couple of seasons.
The unique sea-trout tube fly design will give anglers a fly that perform perfect in still-water and enable the use of different hooks that fit your style of fishing – These flies are specifically designed to be used with the creative L-RIG system devised by Mr. Jens Bursell – But the sea-trout tube fly will also work as your normal tube fly: with a hook fixed at the rear of the fly – For that purpose we have also supplied the box-selection of flies with a length of our high-grade hook-guard – Cut it into a desirable size and fix it to the rear of the sea-trout tube fly (This hook guard can also be used for fixing the L-rig on long-winged flies) – see below. A small selection of Owners famous ST-36BC in # 14 – 16 and a thorough HOW-TO make the L-RIG concludes this coastal tube fly kit

L-RIG sea-trout fly

Asymmetrically mounting of the treble as seen on this L-RIG, helps the hook find a secure hold in the mouth of the sea-trout. The majority of fish you want to release on the coast is small fish – and when hooking these with the L-RIG, you have a much higher frequency of fish hooked in the outer parts of the mouth compared to flies tied on a conventional hook – and many of these fish will only be pricked in the thin outer skin of the mouth, where they are very easy to unhook with minimal damage to the fish.

The L-RIG on Sea-trout tube fly

The highest landing rate on the small trebles for coastal sea-trout fishing is achieved by mounting the treble asymmetrically loosely dangling in a blood loop – The L-RIG  was originally designed by Danish top-angler Jens Bursell.

  • The beauty of this asymmetric hook mounting is, that it makes it possible to use smaller and better penetrating hooks on a sea-trout tube fly with higher efficiency:
  • The hook points are better exposed leading to a higher chance of connecting with the fish when it grabs the fly
  • The hook gape is better exposed leading to a more solid hook grip.
  • Using a mounting system, that makes it possible to use smaller hooks with correspondingly smaller barbs, also means, that you shorten the time of de-hooking and make less tissue damage on the fish –

Salmon fly fishing

August:  My favourite month for fishing – Salmon is starting to settle in the pools – Afternoon is turning into the evening – Winters waiting in the hills.

  • Tubes & Waddington Shank – another Ace on your hand

  • New things in the FISHMADMAN shop

The Waddington Shank – An ace in your hand

Waddington Garry dog salmon flyThe Waddington shank is a hook design made by late British angler Mr Richard Waddington in the 1950s – The Waddington Shank is a lure system made of parallel wires with a hook hinged at the rear. Mr Waddington designed this system to allow anglers to make large flies that would sit well in the water and not instigate problems with leverage when hooking up with fish – Problems with leverage were certainly an issue with anglers before the 1950s Where anglers would use big single hooks – as big as 10/0 and even bigger!  – read more

Don’t miss out on the action – Tie on a Waddington shank

Salmon fly Garry dog tied on waddington shank

Late-season salmon caught on big one ¾ inch Black & Orange Waddington Shank

Many anglers will avoid the Waddington Shanks simply because they find the setup a bit too intricate – that´s a shame as the Waddington Shank offers the river angler yet another instrument for fishing salmon or trout, and the fly tied on a Waddington Shank will behave differently from tube flies or conventional flies – I would not want to part with my range of Waddington Shanks during a salmon season

Waddington shanks size

Size scale for Waddington Shanks

The size scale for tube flies and Waddington Shanks does not follow the hook system, and size is often given in inches. I will, in the following, try to show this scale in a way that might give you an idea of the different physical aspects and how you might make comparisons with a standard hook size

 Waddington shanks size

NB. Mustad 80500 BL Used as an example (* is not made bigger than 5/0)

Rigging a Waddington Shank

  • Here’s a simple system where a piece of the tube keeps the hook in position. When using this system..make sure to allow the Waddington fly to dry up after each fishing session – otherwise, the hook and shank may rust behind the tubing.
  • We have set up a two ¼ inch Waddington Shank with a # 6 Mustad treble hook…Note how I put a split ring between the hook and shank. This will enable me to change the hook more easily than had I  placed the hook directly in the rear of the shank. Additionally, I have added a piece of 0.55 millimetre nylon (tied down on the hook and shank) – This will keep the hook pointing straight behind the shank
  • I have also tied a piece of mono to the shank and fixed the mono to this single hook – so the hook sits in a straight line out from the fly.

Mr Hotho Vestergaard is the only salmon angler we know – that has caught three salmon in the 20-kilo range (+ 44 lb.) –

You might want to check out his fly-tying style on Waddington Shanks.

Hotho Westergaard fly fishing

This salmon + 21-kilo (+ 46 lbs.)

Fishmadman friend and salmon-angler-Jedi Mr Hotho Vestergaard is a great believer in the Waddington Shank system. Hotho makes his Waddington fly upside-down, or rather: he turns the eye of the shank facing downwards – This will make the shank work in new ways – with a slightly diving motion that Hotho prefers on specific types of fast water

When a spate runs through the river, those two days after the spate will be ideal for a big fly like this 1 3/4 # Waddington Shank Garry Dog…

Size scale for tube flies

Like the Waddington Shank, the tube fly offers the river angler unique ways to present the fly – some so exclusive that we had to design a place on the web dedicated to the world of tube flies. In Europa and particularly in Scandinavia, the tube fly crowds the fly box – some may say it is a matter of fashion trends. Still, the success of the tube fly is by far attributed to the incredible versatility and adjustability of the tube fly system.

10 inches below the surface is a hot area to present the fly to Atlantic salmon during summer, and many anglers will tie tube flies specifically to target this area using either floating or slow-sinking fly lines

Waddington shank setup

Hotho westergaard giant Atlantic salmon

UP-SIDE-DOWN Waddington Shank

Denne laks + 21 kilo

Waddington shank Hotho Westergaard

Waddington Shank Garry Dog

Størrelse for rørfluer

The Surffilauta tied as a tube fly

Anglers from Finland have great opportunities to fish with fly for trout and salmon – and a range of super flies and fly tier’s come out of Finland.

One of these flies is the Surffilauta or The Surfboard as we have learned to call it – This highly efficient wake fly is designed by renowned angler and sportswriter Mr. Pertti Kanerva in 1996… We have worked together with Pertti to make a version of his famous Surfboard fly tied on our 1.8 millimeter Hard tube.

Below you will find ideas on how to transform this and other top water flies to tube fly versions

The Surffilauta one of the best known top water flies in Scandinavia – Super slick design that will appeal to greedy pikes – salmon and trout…and probably a lot of fast swimming critters to

You will need :

  • Foam
  • Silver tinsel
  • A medium size Eye
  • 1.8 millimeter hard tube
  • Hook guard

The Pompero salmon dry fly

The Pompero fly

The Pompero fly is a classic in the world of Scandinavian salmon dry flies. It was designed in 1976 by Finnish angler Heikki Anttonen – who is known as a superior fly tier and salmon dry fly angler. Here two Pompero flies in attractive colors – Note the wide solid – cut – fan-wing.

This spring Fishmadman had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Anttonen in Finland – Read the story about the world of Mr. Anttonen here on Fishmadman

The Pompero fly

Grey, olive, greenish colors, a dens hackle, a cigar-shaped body made of polypropylene yarn and wing and tail made from calf tail makes this floating classic a top choice for the angler pursuing salmon in the rivers of Northern Norway. Mr. Anttonen ties the Pompero fly in several sizes but favor the smaller versions during the Nordic summer…

” Moisie fishing this morning was canceled because of excessive wind and rain and fog 🙁  We hope this afternoon will work out, and that the helicopter can fly tomorrow to get us to Mile 12 Pool !”

” Hello Fishmadman : A little fish story – On the upper Moisie River in Quebec, the access is by helicopter. After no fish hooked for the whole day, and the weather getting worse, we had only 30 minutes until the helicopter was grounded. That’s when I saw this salmon roll, near a big rock well out in the pool. I ran down and quickly waded into position and managed to work out a long cast to cover the fish with a Green Squirrel hitch tube, and it took on the first swing. The helicopter arrived just as I was landing the fish, and we had to quickly release a beautiful Moisie salmon and race to pack up our gear as the impatient pilot waited with the rotors turning!
