Dear topwater anglers…We have much to write about this time as I have been postponing the newsletter due to repetitive strain injuries in my hands and arms. Luckily it has not kept me from fishing or engineering in the fly-tying department.  and we are sure you will like some of the flies and ideas we have for you this time.

We have forged a great hitch fly…
The Hitchman

Atlantic salmon on riffling hitch tube fly

Over the + 40 years I have tied flies for salmon fishing, I have only made one or two flies that I would call unique – so it is with joy and a sense of achievement that we now can disclose a new series of riffling hitch tube flies that fits the bill as a fantastic fly.

Here is one of many summer salmon that fancied the Hitchman fly

The Hitchman Series in the making
Maybe just an extra glimpse in the water?

Riffling hitch tube fly - Hitchman fly

See-through & iridescent

riffling hitch tube fly - the hitchman

Like a good cooking recipe, we have combined the right things and made an irresistible dish. Here the Green Hitchmann fly tied on our 3.2 mm. tubing. The red spot on the throat of the fly indicates the entrance hole for the leader and doubles as a vision of the stomach seen on small see-through fry

tube for riffling hitch

To achieve a subtle impression I have welded small strands of holographic material to our clear tubing, this gives me a see-through fly with shimmering flanks. We haven’t coloured the tubes in the image it is in fact the reflective tinsel that is mirrored in the tubing material, adding to the general colour effect of the flies.

Iridescent pixels… a great detail on the new riffling hitch flies

I have sins the 90´s used these iridescent pixels for my sea trout flies and lures. Applying this shimmering material to the head of the Hitchman tube fly gave the fly a unique visual balance and a great unified look.

The pixels will act differently on various colour backgrounds, I have had the best result on a plain black background. I use super-glue as finishing varnish on the head of the flies and sprinkle the pixels into the still vet super-glue while I rotate the fly in the fly tying vice

The Thompson River Caddis on tube

What’s the point of such a small tube fly?

In the description above, we feature a tiny hitch tube fly with a length of 1 centimetre or 0.39 inches tied on a thin 1.1-millimetre tubing. It is a tiny salmon fly, and anglers not acquainted with tube flies for their surface fishing would wonder if a similar small fly tied on a single hook would not be a better solution. Why do these intricate ways of the tube fly, you may ask? – There are many answers to this question, and one answer is that such a tiny tube fly works in ways differently than a similar fly tied on a single or double hook, and in that way, it is interesting. The skittering and unpredictable behaviours of such a light tube fly are significant, both under and on the surface, and such small tube flies can make a dull and uninteresting warm summer’s day into a great sporting event…

Fishmadman
Fishmadman

We have decided to add a whole new service concept to our range of flies here on Fishmadman – a service that falls nicely in line with the updated worldwide thoughts on reusing things…
Anglers using our flies…. rarely, if ever, lose their tube-surface flies…for obvious reasons: you would change the hook inserted into the tubing and not the entire fly when you hit a rock or bend a hook on a strong fish – The flies will live on until they fall apart and are discarded… Over the years, both my  business associate Per and I have rescued and reused our favourite flies …and we think it is time to have this service on all our flies…so if you have one particular fly that outperforms other flies you have from us..then keep it safe and when the time comes …we will breath new life into the small vessel the plastic tubing is
To return flies to us, please mail them to Fishmadman I/S, Stakhaven 8, 2500 Valby, Denmark… Add notes, and we will be in contact… The service is completely free and part of our – no-nonsense product guarantee

Jesper Fohrmann

Dear topwater anglers…It has regrettably been some time since we wrote to you last time… I have been afflicted by repetitive strain injury caused by using my computer – a modern-day “workplace injury” one could say.

We have been swamped in 2018, and we hope the many flies we have mailed out to you have given you some great days at the river.

  • Sinking poly leaders – perfect for surface fishing.

  • Keep your leader and tippet in the refrigerator.

  • Some new flies for 2019

  • The Fishmadman sale.

It was a hot and dry season in the northern hemisphere…

fortomme til riffling hitch

Thin leaders, riffling hitch, dry flies and tiny flies fished close to or on the surface was certainly the way to catch salmon in the summer of 2018 – Maybe the upcoming season will be a different one with more water and lower temperature – but don’t leave your top-water gear at home.

The changes in climate temperature also had its effect on the fishing season of 2018, and it was one of the driest salmon seasons I can recall. Rivers across the northern hemisphere suffered from very low water and higher than average water temperatures – How odd it may sound; these was ideal conditions for riffling hitch and dry fly fishing, and many anglers had weeks of consecutive good topwater fishing.

FRANCES FLY - MICRO CONEHEAD

One tiny Frances fly that did well in the summer of 2018 – Fished in the fast, shallow runs it would catch salmon when all else failed …here paired with a dwarf-like # 18 Partridge Salmon Stinger hook.

Sinking polyleaders are the best leader for wake, dry fly and riffling hitch fishing…

airflo polyleader til riffling hitch

We know that recommending sinking leaders for surface fishing is a somewhat controversial and bold statement – never the less that is what we believe. We readily use poly leaders in our fishing… with great success.

Go to our poly leaders for riffling hitch

The leader is an extension of your fly line

The link between our fly line and fly is of great importance to our casting and presentation skills and choice of leader and tippet material is often debated among anglers.

For more than one reason sinking polyleaders fit perfectly into the world of surface fishing and I will try to highlight some of the reasons why.

casting with fly line and big flies

POWER IN CASTING

The density of the polymer leaders will aid you in turning over a big wake and dry flies in windy conditions. The greater density of the polymer leader will also help you to cast straight and precisely when using a long line.

leaders casting shadow

AVOID SHADOWS AND DISTURBANCE WITH SINKING LEADERS…

Our favoured polymer leaders are all slow sinking – We prefer these leaders to those leaders that float because the submerged leader casts less of a shadow that may frighten the fish – The submerged leader also causes less disturbance on the surface (drag) and won’t sink too far down to make the fly drown.

images

POLYMER LEADERS WILL ATTRACT MORE FISH…

This is obviously an expression of views/facts that we have little solid verification of – in fact, it is not the polymer leader in itself that would attract the fish – but the delicate and quite  dynamic polymer leader will be able to transform some of the many fine swirls and curls of the river surface to micro-movements * in your leader and finally your fly – something quite useful when you target fish with micro flies such as riffling hitch and other such miniature flies

* Turn a heavy line…into something much better

In line with our thoughts and experience with small flies and the movements they should/could have at the end of the tippet material – we do recommend that you use polyleaders if you intend to use such patterns on big rods with ditto heavy lines. Heavy lines like; short Scandi shooting heads – Skagit lines and even some full Spey lines in # 9 – 11 may be great for distance casting but some of these line designs could also become all too stiff and rigid and tend to lack the ability to follow the many fine hurls and swirls of the river surface – water movement that we believe to be important in our fishing with smallish surface flies.

See our choice of leaders in the Fishmadman shop.

Take me to your leaders

We’re mad about details…

To preserve our stock of poly leaders we keep them in the refrigerator – making sure you get a product – as fresh as possible… ** Read more about this further down in this newsletter.

How we combine leader and tippet material

We don’t necessarily use a particularly long piece of tippet material at the end of our polyleader. The see-through leader with its dynamic properties is suitably camouflaged in the water column.

We tie the tippet material directly to the core of the polyleader and replace it when it becomes too short or distressed.

polyleaders for riffling hitch and dry fly fishing

The length of tippet material may vary all depending on what thickness tippet material you’re using and also what kind of fly your fishing with.

Some examples of leaders and tippet combination

  • Dry fly fishing with big Bombers or similar big dry/wake flies: 5-foot polyleader + 2.5 – 3 foot (0,8 – 1 meter) of 0.30 mm. (10 lb) tippet material.
  • Riffling hitch fishing with small flies; 5 – 8 foot polyleader + 3 – 4 foot (1 – 1.3 meter) of 0.30 (10 lb) – 0.25 (8 lb) tippet.
  • Big tube flies like Sunray Shadow, weighted flies etc: 8 foot leader +  2.5 – 3 foot (0,8 – 1 meter) of 0.40 mm. (18 lb) tippet material.
Maxima chameleon perfect for dry fly

We have the right tippet material…

We decided to take in tippet material to complete the line of leaders and we simply chose our No. 1 choice of tippet material: Maxima Chameleon … Many of you probably already use Maxima and probably for the same reasons as we do.

Our choice of tippet material

Maxima Chameleon tippet material is the given choice for so many salmon and trout anglers around the world and for a good reason – it does what it promises.

  • A soft shock absorbing nylon – good for fast strikes when sight fishing.
  • Abrasion-resistant.
  • Forms great uniform flat knots.
  • Great breaking strength.
  • Perfect to present big and small flies to picky freshwater fish.

We only supply fresh tippet material – and keep our tippet in the refrigerator **

We personally prefer to buy fresh and well-preserved tippet material – so we promised you that this is what we will be selling you. We buy our Maxima tippet in small freshly made batches and keep them in our company refrigerator – so be sure to get the freshest material from us…nothing else.

Buy fresh tippet for your 2019 season

We’re probably the only fly shop in the world that keep leaders and tippet in the fridge…

keep your leader and tippet bmaterial in the refrigirator

Longer lasting when kept cold

** Why we keep our nylon and polymer leaders/tippet in the refrigerator?

99% of chemical reactions go slower if they are cold, and as a guide, for artificial age testing of polymers, the rule of thumb is 10 degrees Celsius  = doubling of the time. This is a readily used formula in polymer (nylon) product lifespan validation.

Thompson river caddis

Later this season we will be adding yet another caddisfly imitation to our range of steelhead wake flies;  a tube wake-fly version of the Thompson River Caddis. Here is the original Thompson River Caddis tied by the designer, Mr Harry Lemire (1932-2012), who in 1986 designed this caddis imitation intending to target summer-run steelhead as a low-riding, waking fly.  Harry fished it with a floating line while dressing the leader and fly with floatant.  It soon became one of his favourites. How to work the Micro Frances Conehead flies

Frances conehead salmon fly

Our small Frances Conehead flies (8 and 10 millimetres big) are tied on an aluminium tube with a tiny brass cone-head giving them just the proper density. Small horns from Chinese boar and a skirt made out of hair from the Tanuki fox make this fly very attractive – The Frances fly family is probably one of the most versatile flies available. Tiny miniature crustation-like creatures like our Micro Frances series into heavy versions tied on a long copper tube – all designed to be fished uniquely.
I have enjoyed fishing for many years with the tiny conehead versions we do at Fishmadman. As for other Frances flies, I like to fish them drifting towards the fish, a technique you can use on many different flies but a technique that is incredibly productive with these weighted micro conehead flies.
To show you how I do, I have made some crude sketches to give you a rough idea.
fishing salmon on Frances fly

Position the Frances fly a meter (3 foot) or more in front of the position where you expect the salmon (or trout) to be – Keep your rod high at the end of the cast.

frances conehead fly - how to fish it

Lower your rod and let the fly sink while it drifts towards the lie of the fish. Don’t worry…with time; you will become an expert at this.

salmon on Frances conehead fly

When you believe your fly is near the spot where the fish lies – Keep the line tight, and the fly should rise to the surface – and the fish will most likely cease it

Striped Bass on a surface fly

Daniel Wells is an experienced steelhead angler that has moved to Massachusetts where he has found sport in the striped bass fishing in estuaries, the surf, and a unique fishery, The Cape Cod Canal. Daniel soon realized that the Cape Cod Canal is one of the toughest environments to fly fish, but he found out that it could be done with very heavy Skagit gear. Daniel has been trying to design flies that are specific for the Canal with the focus on waking flies as the canal is moving around 4-5 knots and can have excellent surface feeds when the timing of fast current and sunrise coincide.
Still, in the infancy of Daniels development of these flies, we were proud to deliver some of our riffling hitch tube that Daniel has designed some of his initial striped bass surface flies on. Flies that are light and relatively easy to cast on double hand salmon gear.
We can only say we are looking forward to your season and hope that your fly design has spawned more striped bass anglers to pick up the double hand rod and try out your surface flies… To contact Daniel in regards to his wake fly design – You may contact him through his Instagram profile here

Juvenile Steelhead and Atlantic salmon parr are skilled surface hunters that have their attention fixed to the surface as soon as insects start swarming at the river bank.

Millions of years of training have made them what they are, and it is when conditions are perfect they take full advantage of the food on the surface…The temperature in the river and the air is a critical element of their surface activity – something we, as anglers, will experience when we target the adult fish entering the river.

Traditionally anglers target steelhead on the river’s surface during summer and into late autumn. Many different wake fly patterns have been designed for this highly specialized sport that draws anglers deep into the wilderness of Oregon and British Columbia. Many fly patterns are designed to wake subtly. Others are made to be fished more actively.

Rivers are turbulent, and the light is low – Spotting the fly on the river surface can be challenging, so we decided to make some visible wake flies.

Anglers have been fishing this new steelhead wake fly pattern on different rivers in British Columbia and Oregon season 2014 – 15 –  and the results have been great. We call this tube fly The FlashBack Bug.

We have tied the fly in 3 sizes similar to flies tied on # 1 – 4 – 8 hooks
It features our Riffling Hitch tube system, and the fly wakes perfectly in the rough and calm water.

iridescent foam makes the fly shows up out on the river

We have combined some of the favoured steelhead wake fly patterns in the design of the FlashBack Bug and used some of the best fly tying material available to create a wake fly that would perform perfectly.

The iridescent foam used as back on the fly reflects the light and makes the fly glow upon the river even in poor light conditions.

Iridescent: Opalescent, shimmering, luminous, glittering, sparkling, dazzling, shining, gleaming, kaleidoscopic, rainbow-coloured –

We have many words for this highly attractive-looking material that we find with animals on land and in water –

Iridescence (also known as goniochromism) is the property of certain surfaces that appear to change colour as the angle of view or illumination changes. It is often created by structural colouration.

We have combined the iridescent colors with soft 2-millimeter sheets of black EVA foam to create this great looking fly tying material

Tube flies is the big thing in Europa and salmon, trout and Northern pike anglers will readily use tubes for many different fly patterns. Not only do the tubes allow anglers to make big light pattern that is easy to cast on light fly fishing equipment, but the tube fly also gives the angler new ways of presenting the fly as something unique.

salmon on tube fly

Tube fly for difficult situations

As I write this post, I have just returned from an evening fishing at the mouth of the river where I fish – Salmon had just entered on the 6 o’clock tide and as the water was pulling back to the sea. Small and big salmon were settling near the big rocks on the river bed.

As the water is only a few feet deep, I use tube dry flies; tiny Frances shrimp flies and single hook wet fly patterns like Blue Charm and Undertaker in # 12… Today the fish was unwilling and a cold northerly wind blew in from the sea… In such difficult situations, most anglers will pack up and leave. Still, I brought out tiny clear-bodied tube flies with wings made of a few hairs from silver tippet squirrel – I call it the V-FLY, and I fish this micro tube fly as a riffling hitch pattern – Riffling hitch pattern can work wonders in such unfriendly conditions. I soon had the first fish turning for the fly, and almost every fish settling in the shallow pool tried to grab the fly.  Two fish to the tiny V-FLY an hour later had turned this bitterly cold evening into a fantastic day of salmon fishing.

tube fly designWe produce some of the best tubes for tube flies.

As tube fly fishermen, we appreciate perfect tubes for our fishing and fly tying, and we have used countless hours with plastic manufacturers to get the tubes perfect for tube fly production. Most tubes bought in fly fishing shops are made for different purposes than flies and fly fishing. Still, the tubes designed with Fishmadman fit the bill – One such tube is our tube designed for riffling hitch flies such as the simple V-FLY – This is a flexible tube made from a PVC free Polyethylene formula that will hold many different size hooks – withstand harsh weather conditions and a lot of mechanical wear and tear.

Hvad spiser laks i havet?

Sea fishing for salmon

Native Fish Society - Steelheaden`s redningsmand

Tom Derry En dedikeret sportsfisker

Top-Water specialist Tom Derry

steelhead on wake flyEn fisk er for værdifuld blot at fange blot een gang

Micro Frances fluer

Fluemønstret du må have i din flueæske!

salmon on frances flyHvis alt andet fejler

Prøv dem i denne sæson.

What salmon eat in the sea – Newsletter June 2015 http://www.fishmadman.com/newsletter/salmon-eat-sea-newsletter-june-2015 Tue, 02 Jun 2015 19:31:00 +0000 http://www.fishmadman.com/?page_id=16247
Fishmadman newsletter

Hello fly fisherman and welcome to another Fishmadman newsletter

This time we are proud to present something quite unique.

Dry fly regards from Per & Jesper

  • We took the time to collect images and information on the food Atlantic salmon feed on out on the high seas. We read different reports on the subject and obtained pictures of the animal salmon would have eaten.
  • Read about the Native Fish Society, a non-profit organization that advocates for the recovery of wild, native fish in the United States Pacific Northwest.
  • Our NEW page on tubes and how to use them in fly tying.

What do salmon eat at high seas?

Sea fishing for salmon

Fly fishing for salmon is to some degree still a riddle – and anglers will spend countless hours fishing over seemingly uninterested fish that have left a greedy, a la carte life at sea to return to their place of birth, fully nourished and with little or no need or desire for sustenance…Suddenly – and with no reasonable explanation – the fish will rise from the bottom to grab your small fly.

Is it hunger, a memory of food or just frustration that triggers this irrational event – We cant really tell but it inevitably has to do with the behaviour and characteristics of the food salmon has been feeding on for millions of years –

Follow us to see the treats on the salmon menu carte as we delve deeper into the mind of this most demanding and frustrating of gastronomes.

Rarely seen images…

It has been an eye-opening experience for us to uncover the information on salmons’ feeding behaviour at sea – and we think you will be equally entertained when you see the images of these rarely seen critters.

Salmon are opportunistic feeders

A common denominator in all the evidence we have read about salmon feeding behaviour is that Atlantic salmon are opportunistic feeders that will eat the food at a given location and time.

Shrimps are popular with salmon – but fish was the primary source of protein

One of the surveys done by scientists in the North Atlantic showed that fish could be the bulk diet in weight – but shrimps could account for a staggering 95% of the food in numbers.

In the coastal waters of Newfoundland, salmon feed mainly on herring, capelin and sand eels, while in Labrador, young cod was an essential part of the diet.

Native Fish Society - The Steelhead liberator

Over the years of fly fishing, Per Fischer and I have met some very dedicated people working with fish conservation. Mr. Tom Derry is one of them. Tom is a director in a private not for profit foundation that works to restore runs of wild steelhead and the rivers they live in throughout the Pacific Northwest in North America.

Tom Derry A dedicated angle

We have come to know Tom Derry from the Native Fish Society through our mutual passion for surface flies and top-water fishing.

We have recovered some wild fish populations while practising catch and release; it’s the right thing to do!

Top-water steelheader Mr. Tom Derry

A passion for fishing

Growing up in Oregon, Tom´s passion for fishing is fierce.
My earliest memories are of fishing with my Dad and Grandpa. Fishing has been
a lifelong passion of mine, and in recent years my interest has turned to help recover wild fish populations throughout the Pacific Northwest. I have worked at the Native Fish Society for twelve years as a River Steward and Director of Wild Steelhead Funding. My job is securing funding for our River Steward program and advocacy work. I have met and fished with many anglers who want to give back financially for all the pleasure fish, and fishing has brought them. A side benefit of my work is that it has allowed me to fish some of the best waters in the world. “

steelhead on wake flyA Fish Is Too Valuable To Catch Just Once

With Salmon and Steelhead populations at less than three percent of historical numbers throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Native Fish Society also promotes and enforces catch-and-release fishing to ensure anglers can continue fishing with minimal impact on the fishery. A Quote from Lee Wulff says it all, “A Fish Is Too Valuable To Catch Just Once”.

A passion for fish

Native Fish Society works to stop habitat degradation before it starts, challenge commercial and sport fisheries that over-harvest, improve passage or encourage the removal of hydroelectric dams, and highlight the negative impacts from hatchery programs. .

The Micro Frances Fly

A must have fly pattern for salmon!

When you have seen the images and read the story on What salmon eat on high seas – You might better understand why the Frances fly has become one of the most famous salmon flies ever made – This special-looking fly is used widely on rivers across the North Atlantic – in both cumbersome carrot-looking versions and tiny variants – light as insects.

We have been working on getting some tiny ones ready for the upcoming season – All tied meticulously with a notion for the details we like in this pattern.

  • Thin, tapered and vibrant antennas
  • Partridge’s famous outpoint  * X2B hooks
  • Crisp hackle from Whiting
  • The right colour, red wool from Iceland

* The Partridge X2B has unique hooking abilities perfect for the tough skin inside the mouth of salmon.

Tiny # 18 Frances fly in the mouth of an October salmon.

We have tied the flies on Partridge X2B # 18 – 16 and 14 hooks, and in addition to these feather-light flies, we have also made an absolute miniature tube fly version tied on our 3.2-millimetre tube – perfect for small treble or single hooks

salmon on frances flyIf all else fails

There is something magical about these tiny Frances flies – They seem to evoke the biting behaviour in salmon in such a way that some anglers swear to this dwarf pattern for most of their fishing – Other anglers I know keep a box with this fly as a last resort – if all else fails – I like to use the dwarf Frances flies when the river drops away during summer and fish stop and stay in slowish water – I consistently tie this fly on when I fish autumn salmon in Scottish rivers – Those late silver runners can’t resist these tiny shrimp imitations.

Try them out this season –

Welcome to Fishmadman and the world of fly fishing with wake, riffling hitch and dry flies

Fly fishing for salmon and steelhead on the surface is probably the most exciting sports humans can venture into – This form of fly fishing has become increasingly popular in the last 60 years – but anglers have most likely been fishing steelhead and salmon on the top since the birth of fly fishing

We collect information about our sport – and design some of the best flies for the job

READ MORE ABOUT OUR MISSION

THINGS WE WORK WITH

On the Fishmadman site, we will highlight the essence of surface fly fishing. We hope to do so by showing you technique, know-how and some of the many fascinating flies made for our sport.

SURFACE FLY PATTERNS MADE ON TUBE ARE OUR SPECIALITY

Dry fly – Wake fly – Skaters – Riffling Hitch fly tied on the tube will give you a feather-light solution that stays on top and perform better than most of their counterparts tied on long shank hooks. We have multiple pages on Fishmadman showing you how to do such tube flies.

THE WORLD OF THE BOMBER FLY

During summer, we stay at salmon rivers in Norway – and when the conditions are right, we will tie on a dry fly like a salmon Bomber. You will find Bombers at the river bank cut into shape on our pages.

Just like we make flies tuned to the rivers we fish – other anglers will have honed trout and salmon Bombers just for their district, river and even unique pools – We try continuously to collect this information and publish it on our pages and blog. Read more

BOMBER DRY FLY ON TUBE

Our Bomber dry flies are tied on a tube. A design we developed in 1995 and still work to refine and perfect. On our pages, you will find detailed illustrations that could aid you in developing your surface flies tied on a tube. Read more

RIFFLING HITCH & WAKE FLY ON TUBE

Riffling Hitch is a technique that emerged during almost a century of fly fishing traditions. Allegedly the method was generated as a coincidence by Canadians – who in Victorian days would have recycled damaged gut-eye flies and tied them directly to the leaders using a series of hitches – Herby the fly could have trailed to the surface, creating the all-important Riffling Hitch wake. Read more

Like many other European anglers, we will tie Riffling Hitch flies on a tube and our pages, you will find special Riffling Hitch and wake flies done on our Riffling Hitch tube design – See the comprehensive pages on How to work with tube flies on the surface. Read more

THE TUBE FLY – ANOTHER ACE ON YOUR HAND

The tube fly has been part of the European fly box since the 1940s, and anglers have been developing fly patterns on a tube that would suit different rivers and seasons. A fly tied on a tube could look and work like any other fly tied on a single salmon hook – But it can also be something completely different – with abilities that go beyond any fly you have tried… tap into our vast knowledge base on tube fly know-how – and get another Ace on your hand.

SUPERIOR SALMON AND STEELHEAD FLIES

Passion & curiosity for flies and fishing is what determines our editorial line on Fishmadman – and we have collected some of the most interesting flies on our page: Flies like General Practitioner, Brooks Sunray Shadow, Collie Dog, The Frances Fly, and a Micro Conehead fly like the Kinnaber Killer.

Fiskeri med musefluer

Dear Flyfisher: Welcome to yet another newsletter from Fishmadman – We have come to the beginning of a new season for Atlantic Salmon – and steelhead

Season 2014 was not a very god year for the Atlantic salmon – and many concerning words has been written about the problems this fantastic fish is facing.

We hope for a better year in 2015 and recommend that you follow the great achievements of NASF (North Atlantic Salmon Fund) and Native Fish Society that work to help Atlantic Salmon and steelhead.

We do also hope that you in 2015 might take the opportunity to make someone  interested in fishing  – We need more people to be passionate about our sport and the fish we fish for – we believe that passionate people will help to preserve our fantastic rivers and the fish that run them.

This time we have a winner for the annual Fishmadman competition – Stories about a good-bug that made the day – and a wooden card that will keep bad-bugs away.

The Flashback Bug

Steelhead anglers have been fishing this new steelhead bug on different rivers in BC and Oregon this summer, and the results have been great. It was named The FlashBack Bug by steelheader Loren Irving from Oregon. We have tied it in 3 sizes like flies on 1 – 4 – 8 hooks. It features our Riffling Hitch tube system and wakes perfectly in rough and calm water.

Please take the opportunity now and get 2 of each size FlashBack Bugs + 6 hooks in our tube fly box.

Keep moth from fly tying material

Red cedar Bug card - keep the moth out of fly tying materialJuniperus Virginiana, or Red Cedar, has been used for centuries as a product to keep moths away from your clothing – It is the strong smell of the Red Cedar that helps to cover up the smell of the things that the moth wants to lay their eggs on like fur and feathers –

A report from the University of California at Davis suggests that, over time, Red Cedar will kill the moth larvae that may have found their way to your cloth or fly-tying material.

Do what you can to keep the moth´s away… and keep our Red Cedar Bug-Cards alongside your fly-tying equipment – Keep things in plastic bags and change the Red Cedar Bug-Cards every  3 – 4 years.

We at Fishmadman have done so for decades and have (knock on wood) not had any problems with the moths.

Tube flies for costal fishing

coastal sea-trout tube fly

Get more sea-trout on the bank – Using a sea-trout tube fly !

Sea trout fishing in estuaries and on the open coast is the big thing in Denmark and many Danish fly fishermen strive to perfect the flies for this fantastic sport. Most coastal sea-trout flies are similar to those used  for still-water fishing in the UK, and anglers need to retrieve the flies to create a sense of life – The take from the sea-trout is often in direct line with the rod and leader and angler need to strike the fish quickly to secure a hook-up.

A conventional fly is not always the best solution and many anglers will lose fish to the fact that the mouth of a trout is a hard and bony place where a normal hook will have a tough time find a secure hold.

Read below about an ingenuous sea-trout tube fly solution that will give you more fish on the bank

trout fishing techniques

Recent surveys in the Danish fishing magazine Fisk & Fri has shown, that only 45 % of all sea-trout contacts on the coast are landed with traditional hook flies in the # 8-2 range. But – by shifting to tube flies with small trebles in the# 12-18 range mounted asymmetrically you could make a landing rate of over 90%.  You could roughly double your average catch.

We at Fishmadman have made a new series of tube flies specially designed to this type of fishing.

sea-trout tube fly
Flies from the NEW sea-trout tube fly series : Proven killers for coastal sea-trout fishing tied on our hard 1.4-millimetre tube – The sea-trout tube fly can be rigged conventionally or with the L-RIG system described below

Together with some of the best fly designers and pro-tiers we work with we sat down to compile a collection of most wanted coastal sea trout pattern. Famous Scandinavian sea trout pattern like; Grå Frede, Flammen, Rør Tobis, Slagter Fluen, Arizona Shrimp, Nat-Zonker, Zonker Kutling, Snydefluen, Børsten, Polar Magnus was re-modelled into tube flies – weighted and shaped into perfection These are the first commercial coastal tubes flies on the market but they already account for hundreds of fish caught as we and our team has fished with them during the last couple of seasons.
The unique sea-trout tube fly design will give anglers a fly that perform perfect in still-water and enable the use of different hooks that fit your style of fishing – These flies are specifically designed to be used with the creative L-RIG system devised by Mr. Jens Bursell – But the sea-trout tube fly will also work as your normal tube fly: with a hook fixed at the rear of the fly – For that purpose we have also supplied the box-selection of flies with a length of our high-grade hook-guard – Cut it into a desirable size and fix it to the rear of the sea-trout tube fly (This hook guard can also be used for fixing the L-rig on long-winged flies) – see below. A small selection of Owners famous ST-36BC in # 14 – 16 and a thorough HOW-TO make the L-RIG concludes this coastal tube fly kit

L-RIG sea-trout fly

Asymmetrically mounting of the treble as seen on this L-RIG, helps the hook find a secure hold in the mouth of the sea-trout. The majority of fish you want to release on the coast is small fish – and when hooking these with the L-RIG, you have a much higher frequency of fish hooked in the outer parts of the mouth compared to flies tied on a conventional hook – and many of these fish will only be pricked in the thin outer skin of the mouth, where they are very easy to unhook with minimal damage to the fish.

The L-RIG on Sea-trout tube fly

The highest landing rate on the small trebles for coastal sea-trout fishing is achieved by mounting the treble asymmetrically loosely dangling in a blood loop – The L-RIG  was originally designed by Danish top-angler Jens Bursell.

  • The beauty of this asymmetric hook mounting is, that it makes it possible to use smaller and better penetrating hooks on a sea-trout tube fly with higher efficiency:
  • The hook points are better exposed leading to a higher chance of connecting with the fish when it grabs the fly
  • The hook gape is better exposed leading to a more solid hook grip.
  • Using a mounting system, that makes it possible to use smaller hooks with correspondingly smaller barbs, also means, that you shorten the time of de-hooking and make less tissue damage on the fish –

Here a tube fly set up with an L-RIG – When using a long-wing fly like this Nat Zonker from our coastal seatrout tube-fly series it’s recommended to mount the L-rig in a hook guard to minimize tangle from the loose dangling hook. See how to do this specific variant of the rig here

Salmon fly fishing

August:  My favourite month for fishing – Salmon is starting to settle in the pools – Afternoon is turning into the evening – Winters waiting in the hills.

The Waddington Shank – An ace in your hand

Waddington Garry dog salmon flyThe Waddington shank is a hook design made by late British angler Mr Richard Waddington in the 1950s – The Waddington Shank is a lure system made of parallel wires with a hook hinged at the rear. Mr Waddington designed this system to allow anglers to make large flies that would sit well in the water and not instigate problems with leverage when hooking up with fish – Problems with leverage were certainly an issue with anglers before the 1950s Where anglers would use big single hooks – as big as 10/0 and even bigger!  – read more

Don’t miss out on the action – Tie on a Waddington shank

Salmon fly Garry dog tied on waddington shank

Late-season salmon caught on big one ¾ inch Black & Orange Waddington Shank

Many anglers will avoid the Waddington Shanks simply because they find the setup a bit too intricate – that´s a shame as the Waddington Shank offers the river angler yet another instrument for fishing salmon or trout, and the fly tied on a Waddington Shank will behave differently from tube flies or conventional flies – I would not want to part with my range of Waddington Shanks during a salmon season

Waddington shanks size

Size scale for Waddington Shanks

The size scale for tube flies and Waddington Shanks does not follow the hook system, and size is often given in inches. I will, in the following, try to show this scale in a way that might give you an idea of the different physical aspects and how you might make comparisons with a standard hook size

Rigging a Waddington Shank

  • Here’s a simple system where a piece of the tube keeps the hook in position. When using this system..make sure to allow the Waddington fly to dry up after each fishing session – otherwise, the hook and shank may rust behind the tubing.
  • We have set up a two ¼ inch Waddington Shank with a # 6 Mustad treble hook…Note how I put a split ring between the hook and shank. This will enable me to change the hook more easily than had I  placed the hook directly in the rear of the shank. Additionally, I have added a piece of 0.55 millimetre nylon (tied down on the hook and shank) – This will keep the hook pointing straight behind the shank
  • I have also tied a piece of mono to the shank and fixed the mono to this single hook – so the hook sits in a straight line out from the fly.

Hotho westergaard giant Atlantic salmon

Mr Hotho Vestergaard is the only salmon angler we know – that has caught three salmon in the 20-kilo range (+ 44 lb.) –

You might want to check out his fly-tying style on Waddington Shanks.

Hotho Westergaard fly fishing

This salmon + 21-kilo (+ 46 lbs.)

Fishmadman friend and salmon-angler-Jedi Mr Hotho Vestergaard is a great believer in the Waddington Shank system. Hotho makes his Waddington fly upside-down, or rather: he turns the eye of the shank facing downwards – This will make the shank work in new ways – with a slightly diving motion that Hotho prefers on specific types of fast water

Size scale for tube flies

Like the Waddington Shank, the tube fly offers the river angler unique ways to present the fly – some so exclusive that we had to design a place on the web dedicated to the world of tube flies. In Europa and particularly in Scandinavia, the tube fly crowds the fly box – some may say it is a matter of fashion trends. Still, the success of the tube fly is by far attributed to the incredible versatility and adjustability of the tube fly system.

10 inches below the surface is a hot area to present the fly to Atlantic salmon during summer, and many anglers will tie tube flies specifically to target this area using either floating or slow-sinking fly lines
